LONG POST/RANT INCOMING…
Let’s get real honest about how this CFP auto-bid/play-in tournament proposal has happened, and how the people in charge are on the verge of ruining the single most meaningful regular season in American sports
Many of you thought 4 teams was a uniquely bad number in a sport with 5 power conferences, so you asked for 8 teams. The powers that be used that to shove a 12-team CFP down your throats while simultaneously erasing that 5th conference
Next, a 12-team format that was designed for a world with 5 power conferences played out in a world with 4. They’ve used that flaw to propose further expansion to 14 or 16 teams instead of just retrofitting the auto byes process, which would be an easy fix. Instead, they’re pushing for a format with 12+ auto bids every season, and using G5 inclusion, which none of the real power brokers give a single solitary shit about, to create more playoff games
With an expanded playoff, a 1 vs 2 conference championship game is now meaningless. So what are they doing? No, they aren’t trading in championship weekend for extra CFP games. They’re using that as an excuse to create more games in service of a play-in series that NOBODY asked for.
If we’re going to have a play-in series every year with 8 teams from the B1G and 8 teams from the SEC then guess what that means…
THEY ARE TAKING YOUR DESIRE TO HAVE AN 8-TEAM PLAYOFF AND USING IT TO CREATE A 32-TEAM PLAYOFF. It’s like a rider nobody wants hidden in a bill shoved through congress as midnight approaches in the new fiscal year
Instead of an 82 or 162 game season where stars rested and outcomes weren’t determined by single games, our sport stood alone as the only where every week mattered. One loss could knock the best team out of the national title hunt if other contenders avoided a loss (many of you thought that limited access, but TCU had Cincinnati made consecutive playoffs).
The unique stakes meant there were no meaningless games. A 6-5 team could spoil a rival’s national title hopes with a rivalry weekend upset. The best team didn’t always win, but there was true beauty in that chaos. We almost never crowned a champion who wasn’t the most deserving.
That was already lost for good when we watched an Ohio St team who lost at home to a 5-loss rival play a Notre Dame team who lost to Northern Illinois, but we still had the moniker of “12 best” to lean on, and OSU and ND were rightfully among them… By throwing out a hunt for the best teams and turning this into a preordained field determined by a last weekend playoff, the people in charge are killing the regular season for good. Starters will be rested. Non-conference games will be akin to the NFL preseason. Upsets will be rendered meaningless.
College football has shown awareness around not competing with the NFL- It basically surrendered Thursday nights to the league once the pros started playing on that day too. The major differentiator between the two sports was one had a regular season where EVERY loss mattered.
The reverse logic that is required to turn cfb’s format into NFL lite is beyond belief. It is abandoning the thing that made it the nation’s 2nd most watched sports league in an attempt to try and emulate the UFL with more recognizable logos and a season that overlaps with the NFL
Seems like a massive risk just to sell TV rights on a dozen more games a year.
The people charged with protecting the sport no longer have awareness about what needs protection. CFB actually sold time travel- Going back to the place where fans grew into themselves, in the stadiums they fathers cheered against the same rivals in the same colors on the same November weekends, always with zero margin for error between them and the ultimate prize
Throughout the ages, greed creates blind spots in even the best men... They’re flushing the whole format to keep their conference title game dollars. Focus on a bottom line is keeping them from asking why we watched to start with.
Reds are gonna be stuck in purgatory forever. Win 78 games and never do anything to get better. Can always blame injuries etc. but until the culture in the clubhouse changes.. nothing gets better
