It has been a privilege to spend this Mandela Day alongside the incredible Collen Mashawana Foundation team, church leaders, traditional leaders, our partners, and the people of Tshakhuma as we came together to restore dignity to the Netshivhodza family.

For years, Mr. Edison Netshivhodza, his wife Merriam, and their five children lived in a fragile shack that was further devastated by the floods in Limpopo. Today, we fulfilled our promise by handing over a fully furnished three-bedroom home where they can begin a new chapter filled with hope and security.

The home features three furnished bedrooms, a lounge, dining room, kitchen, indoor bathroom, electricity, running water, and a solar power system generously donated by Sunbox. We also provided food support and created an employment opportunity for Mr. Netshivhodza because true empowerment goes beyond providing a house, it is about restoring dignity and creating sustainable livelihoods.

I am deeply grateful to everyone who joined us in planting flowers, preparing the home, and making this day so special. Together, we have demonstrated that Mandela’s legacy lives on through acts of kindness, compassion, and service.

The Collen Mashawana Foundation has handed over a brand new, fully furnished two-bedroom home to Ms Hazel Naicker, known affectionately as Gogo Hazel, giving the elderly woman and her family a fresh start filled with comfort, safety and dignity.

When we first met Gogo Hazel Naicker, a blind pensioner who relies solely on a government grant, she was living in a dilapidated home and had almost given up hope of ever owning a safe and dignified place to call home. Today, that has changed.

Through our One Brick at a Time programme, we handed over a fully furnished, disability-friendly two-bedroom home with electricity, running water, a solar backup system, and essential household items, including beds, blankets, televisions, food parcels, heaters, and other necessities to help her start a new chapter.

This is more than a house, it is the restoration of dignity, hope, and independence.

I extend my heartfelt gratitude to all our partners, donors, and stakeholders for making this possible. Together, we continue to ensure that the elderly, people living with disabilities, and vulnerable families are not left behind.

One of the earliest initiatives that led to the formation of the CMF began in 2011, when Dr Collen Mashawana gave back to his childhood school, Tshishonga Primary School in Thohoyandou, Venda, donating computers and contributing towards the building of classrooms.

Witnessing the impact of even small acts of support inspired the official launch of the Foundation a year later.

The Collen Mashawana Foundation continues to support the school annually, nurturing its growth and development.
