Under the theme "Together for a Period-Friendly World," the event brought together different stakeholders to discuss opportunities for advancing menstrual health and hygiene.

For millions of girls and women around the world, managing a period is still shaped by access, information, and support.
This Menstrual Hygiene Day, Patricia Humura shares why creating a #PeriodFriendlyWorld continues to matter, and how menstrual health education, open conversations, and access to products can help ensure that periods do not limit participation in everyday life.

Last Friday, we joined youth and stakeholders at the Uganda Youth Mock Parliament, organised by @AHFcares .
The plenary called on the government to develop a national policy on menstrual health to combat school dropouts, stigma, and the lack of sanitary products. Members of Parliament at the event pledged to push the 12th Parliament to prioritise increased funding for menstrual health.

Today, stand with the young people of Uganda and key menstrual health stakeholders at the Parliament of Uganda for the Youth Mock Parliament on Menstrual Hygiene Management 2026!
Menstrual Health, if not addressed holistically, we will continue to see girls drop out of school, lose learning time, and be held back from fully participating in socioeconomic activities.
We believe in advanced policy and financing for dignified, equitable access for every girl and woman.

Yesterday, together with our local partner Ngonda Foundation @NgondaGirl, we conducted a comprehensive menstrual health training for AFRIpads users and Enabel stakeholders in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Participants gained knowledge on puberty, the menstrual cycle and its phases, myths and misconceptions surrounding menstruation, and the proper use and care of reusable pads.
They returned to their communities empowered with knowledge and ready to use this information to help create a more period-friendly world.

From policymakers to manufacturers, the forum brought together stakeholders working to advance menstrual health across Africa.
Key takeaways from the Forum included:
- Setting robust standards for menstrual products and markets.
- Advocating for supportive government policies and taxation reforms.

Special shoutout to @UNFPA East and Southern Africa, Days for Girls International, the Swedish Institute for Standards (SIS), and the Sanitation and Hygiene Fund (SHF) @SHFund__ for making these conversations possible.

We are excited to launch the Sisters for a Period Friendly World Campaign 2026.
This campaign spotlights women, creating lasting impact in their communities by shaping menstrual health policies, practices, and conversations.
Our first feature is Jean T. Madzima, whose work continues to drive safer, more informed, and more open conversations around menstrual health in Zimbabwe.
โWorking in communities has shown me one truth: access to safe menstrual care changes lives. Menstrual health is a fundamental human right.โ
Through her leadership, communities in Zimbabwe are gaining access to menstrual health education through peer-to-peer sessions and community dialogue.

More reflections from the Impure Film Screening in Kenya
โTo push for bigger gains in gender equality, menstrual health must be at the forefront.โ
โ Michelle Tjeenk Willink, CEO, AFRIpads.
โYou can read something and forget it, but when you watch a film like this, you cannot forget it. That is why such films are important in tackling menstrual injustice.โ
โ Wambui Kimani @KelsieKim, Zamara Foundation
โThere is a need for more discussions like these. Menstrual programming must incorporate hygiene, i.e., access to water, soap, and proper sanitation facilities. These are essential to achieving menstrual health
โ Dr Rukia Nzibo, Centre for the Study of Adolescence @CSA_Kenya
โThis is an opportunity for all stakeholders to work together in advancing menstrual health, by supporting programmes that provide safe, high-quality menstrual products, promote menstrual health education, and help end stigma.โ โ Dido Doorman, AFRIpads.
โThe discussion around menstruation should start before menstruation begins, so that adolescents and young people are well prepared.โ Aphline Awuor, Chairperson for the Youth Advisory Committee - Embassy of the Netherlands in Kenya @NLinKenya

We kicked off Menstrual Health Awareness Month with a Pre-Menstrual Health Day outreach in Jinja District ๐ซ
In partnership with the Jinja Network of Young People Living with HIV @JINJANYPA, AGORA @AgoraCFR, and Dr Jimmy Spire Ssentongo @SpireJim,
We visited Busende S.S. and Namagama Primary School, where we provided menstrual health education and distributed sanitary pads to girls in need.
This activity was made possible through the support of Dr Jimmy Spire Ssentongo @SpireJim,
Together with @AFRIpads, @AgoraCFR, and the Jinja Network for Young Women Living with HIV, yesterday we delivered the reusable sanitary pads you contributed to. We donated them to school girls and vulnerable young women in Busoga. The schools included Busedde S. S. and Namaganga P. S. It was such an uplifting moment seeing the joy on their faces. The need is high. We were told that some have been using leaves!
At Busedde S. S. students were few because they had broken off for holidays, but we left behind 400 packs of pads to be distributed to the girls when they return to school. Thanks so much for touching their lives with your generosity. It means a lot.
