Are permanent sutures necessary in small primary ventral hernia repair?
In our new nationwide AFTERHERNIA study, chronic pain, foreign body sensation, and self-reported recurrence were similar between permanent and slowly absorbable sutures.
Congratulations @HReistrup and team!
92.782 spurgt.
Over 70% har svaret.
Det ser vi næsten aldrig.
Tak for hjælpen 🙌

New publication: We have developed the Groin Hernia-Q (GHQ).
In the coming weeks, the GHQ will be distributed to thousands of Danish groin hernia patients as part of the AFTERHERNIA project.

New important publication on patient motivation from Anders Gram-Hanssen and the AFTERHERNIA team!
In this nationwide Danish survey (~19,000 patients), 12% underwent ventral hernia surgery solely for cosmetic or emotional reasons.

Looking back at 2025🎄
In 2025, the AFTERHERNIA project completed a nationwide ventral hernia survey with an 80% response rate. Several manuscripts are now under review, with more studies underway in 2026.
Grateful for the trust, teamwork, and momentum ✨
Paradigm shift in hernia surgery.
Success is more than recurrence. Patients choose surgery to feel better.
Our AFTERHERNIA commentary shows why quality of life and PROs should define non-cancer surgery.

New patient-reported ventral hernia insights from the AFTERHERNIA Project at the annual meeting of the Danish Surgical Society.
Award-winning presentation, key gender differences, and first nationwide data on patient motivation.
28,000+ patients. 80% response rate. Fantastic!
💙 Big thanks to the Aage and Johanne Louis-Hansen Foundation for supporting Evy á Lakjuni’s ventral hernia research!
Her project explores which mesh placement gives the lowest risk of recurrence, lowest risk of bowel obstruction, and best patient-reported outcomes.

🌟 Welcome Camilla and Nanna 🌟
Two new medical students have joined the AFTERHERNIA Project for a dedicated research program.
They will study mesh placement in incisional hernia repair and the role of age in ventral hernia surgery, focusing on patient-reported outcomes.
We are thrilled to share our newly published perspective article:
“Redefining success in hernia surgery: the case for patient-reported outcomes”

Patient-reported outcomes capture what matters most, and that is the focus of the AFTERHERNIA Project.
The AFTERHERNIA team was proud to join #EHS2025Paris!
@HuginReistrup shared early results from our ventral hernia cohort. Glad to have Anders Gram-Hanssen & @Stinaoeberg join us with great input.
Next up: Groin hernia cohort 🧠

📢 NEW SCIENTIFIC ARTICLE OUT NOW!
We’ve just published a systematic review on mesh placement in ventral hernia repair and how it may affect chronic pain, foreign body sensation, and risk of recurrence. 🔗https://t.co/ebhBMnfFpl
