The demand that Hezbollah disarm itself is a chilling echo of Jean de La Fontaine’s fable "The Lion in Love." In the story, a mighty lion falls for a shepherd’s daughter and, blinded by passion, agrees to the father’s cruel condition: he must have his claws clipped and his teeth pulled so that he may enter the human world “safely.” Once the proud lion is rendered harmless - defanged and declawed - the shepherd unleashes a pack of savage dogs upon him.
If the Western powers have not absorbed the fable’s bitter lesson, Iran and Hezbollah most certainly have. They recognize the parable for what it is: a timeless warning against trusting the promises of those who demand your weakness as the price of their peace.
Hezbollah’s love for Lebanon is not the blind, self-destructive infatuation of La Fontaine’s lion; it is a clear-eyed, fierce devotion that refuses to trade the nation’s only real shield for empty guarantees and future slaughter.
Israel dropped a bomb on Mona’s home in Mansouri, South Lebanon, today.
Mona is not a fighter.
She is an environmental activist who dedicated her life to protecting endangered sea turtles.
Because of Israel, Mona is now fighting for her life in a hospital bed.
My good mate @aaronsmith wrote this stunning piece about his week as a temp political staffer in Canberra. 👇🏽
Australians become inured to reading about Canberra and federal politics through the mainstream lens, but Aaron walks us through it warts and all.
Apart from his illuminating insights, I think it's one of the most beautiful pieces of political writing, in fact, beautiful pieces of writing, that I have ever read - seriously.
Aaron crafts a tale of a tumultuous week in Australian politics, a tale of Parliament House and its operatives and inhabitants, like only a master storyteller can.
Congratulations Aaron, this piece will go into my very special book of writing that I will read again and again. I hope everybody does. We need to savour and cherish voices like yours, not just now, but forever.

@The_Fatalace@UziCryptoo Yet you only seem to see Americans who don’t live in Denmark complaining about this. The Danes by and large seem pretty happy with the situation.

Somewhere in Australia today, a writer named Sherele Moody is updating a ledger. She is not a govt official. She receives no state funding. She does it because Australian govt decided counting women killed by men, as they die, is not its responsibility. https://t.co/pKwhGm9728
Beaufort Castle, which the Israelis have bombed from the air and now occupied enjoys UNESCO enhanced protection.
This makes it directly illegal for it to be targeted and used for military purposes.
It is now occupied.
There is no equivocation that this is completely illegal
