Physiotherapist interested in all aspects of elderly care and persistent pain. Aiming to maximise self-management, autonomy and independence for people.
It also brings the question of training to light. Can you teach compassion and personal care? Are these skills largely inherent? Maybe extending training lengths will put off people who see a short training period and an easy path to a career- without the devotion required 🤔
What is stunning from #fourcorners program is the willingly ignorant treatment and management in care homes. Everyone has or have had loved ones in vulnerable conditions towards the end of their life, yet seem so content to allow care of ‘strangers’ to turn to neglect
"Nobody wants to die but it's a natural thing, we are biologically determined to die." Quote from an article about an upcoming film into palliative care and developing our understanding and acceptance of death. Fascinating read 👇#palliativecare#death https://t.co/h5rXAE9oMI
Anyone else find they spend significant parts of days opening curtains in residents rooms and living spaces?! Daylight is an important mediator of sleeping patterns especially for those with dementia #lettherebelight
2/2 To assume this without individual responsibility regarding lifestyle factors is a misguided statement. Would you expect a car to maintain good working order if never serviced? As a society we need to take long term lifestyle choices instead of expecting quick fix quackery
1/2 Seen comments about the ‘pain free state’ being a human right/entitlement. I believe it is a human right to live in an external environment that can provide such a state- good health care, education, socio-economic opportunities etc....
Low energy/motivation is big problem for aged care residents. How much of this is related to a LACK of stress? Has a bad name but we all require healthy levels of stress to function optimally & feel stimulated. How much of this do we think can be optimised by the facility? 🤔
Asked to perform percussion to a palliative patient with end stage cancer with acute exacerbation of chest symptoms. Patient semi conscious and sleeping majority of time. A prime example of missing the point of palliative care? 🤔 #palliativecare
I am paralysed from the top of my shoulders down. No arm movement. But this is me exercising, pushing and pulling the bar, by myself just using tiny shoulder muscles (bar is 2kg).
3 years ago I could only do this with a broom handle.
This has taken 9 years to get here.
RANT: resident with (quickly) progressing neurological condition, bed bound for >1 month, systemic muscular atrophy and complaint of gradual onset right hip pain. X-Ray ➡️ hip fracture ➡️ surgery 🤦♂️ WHAT ARE WE DOING TO THESE PEOPLE? 😡😩 #overtreatment
@YoungcareOZ check out this great charity helping to provide care packages for young people with high care needs. Providing an age related living arrangement for young people in residential care is crucial for mental health and quality of life #youngcare

Watch as this nurse sings to comfort her dying patient.
A powerful reminder that sometimes the greatest things we can offer our patients are not doctor or nurse things. They’re just simply human things:
#Empathy#Kindness#Compassion
A great overview info-graphic of the direction we need to go in for pain management. The “cure” based quick fixes seem to be the result of a ‘now’ culture of quick answers and minimal effort expectations. By @PeteOSullivanPT and colleagues
Prescribe some Xanax and it’l all go away? Sedative medication surely only masks the symptoms without solving the cause. Attempting to discuss the sources of a persons anxiety and talking (problem solving) about it can provide comfort and a way to reduce it

Patients (inherently) want to find a specific diagnosis to (internally & externally) validate real pain they’re experiencing. It is professionals job to educate patients on complexity of pain- not reinforce harmful beliefs with over diagnosis via correlative findings on imaging
#LowBackPain is a complex condition with multiple contributors to both the pain and
associated disability - for most people, the specific cause cannot be identified https://t.co/wgmXhfZi90
