Former Kenyan Ambassador: African Diplomats Are Defending A System That Marginalises Them

Known for his viral 2022 speech at the UN Headquarters in New York, Kenya’s former ambassador to the United Nations, Mbugua Martin Kimani, has reiterated how African diplomats too often defend systems designed to oppress them.

Speaking in Kigali, Rwanda, at the African-led International Security Conference on Africa (ISCA), Kimani expressed regret for his own previous defence of the UN Security Council – which functions primarily as a tool of Western imperialism – and argued that for Africa, regaining sovereignty demands reclaiming, building and developing the continent’s own institutions.

It will be recalled that the United States, a permanent member of the UN Security Council with veto power, voted “NO” to a 2025 UN resolution drafted by Russia, China, Venezuela and the Group of Friends in Defence of the UN Charter calling for the “eradication of colonialism in all its forms and manifestations”.
