Started my banking career in Gtbank and yes, first name basis. I struggled with calling Tayo Aderinokun by name. Stayed with Uncle T or avoided calling the name altogether. The few times I had a face-to-face with him, I just avoided his name completely.
The problem with this TOE name calling is that the evil people in that UBA might put a target on that girl’s back. A target no one asked them to put.
When I worked in UBA 13 years ago, there was no first name policy. Must be a more recent development.
As a rule of thumb, Nigerian firms that require staff to "attend prayers every morning" - are a lot more likely to lack professionalism, and owe their workers several months worth of salaries.
(This is my experience). Professionally managed firms tend to be more focused.
What you are exposed to is your anchor.
You cannot anchor, or benchmark against an event, a point estimate, an experience, an amount, or a quality you do not know exists.
That is why I will continue to preach this:
You are what you are exposed to.
Born Again Christians: The Scripture says...the Lord IS the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
Stop praying for strength and start declaring... “I Am Strong”.
This is not accidental. It’s a system deliberately designed to ensure there are always people desperate enough to be used for violence, bought support or election manipulation.
I actually don’t want to climb any corporate ladders. I don’t care about job titles. I don’t need accolades.
I just want to have income to fund my lifestyle, not be depressed, help other people, and be around good humans. That’s it!
I’m at a point in my life where I pray to keep meeting the right people. People who genuinely want the best for me, hold me in high regard, and add peace to my life.
If the law is against you, argue the facts.
If the facts are against you, argue the law.
If both the facts and the law are against you, argue procedure.
If procedure, law, and facts are all against you — settle.
A reminder that good advocacy is about strategy, not noise.
3 Tools to Build Confidence:
1. Orai (app): it analyzes your speech patterns and gives feedback on pacing, filler words, and others so you can get better .
2. Public speaking VR: practice presenting in a virtual conference room, which sounds weird but is surprisingly helpful for getting over the initial fear.
3 Record yourself on Loom: review how you sound when explaining something. You'll realize you sound way better than the harsh critic in your head tells you. And each new record has you more relaxed.
You won't feel ready to speak up until after you've done it a few times and survived. So start speaking and keep at it.
When you get a job offer that pays you a great salary , gives you freedom to be busy with your side hustles , the environment is healthy and you get to work at home 2/3 days a week with allowances
