A landlord in my area waived two years' rent for a tenant who had just lost her husband.

He told her to use the money she would have spent on rent to rebuild her life and take care of her children.

A few months later, he came for a routine inspection and noticed unfamiliar faces in the apartment.

They introduced themselves as the woman's flatmates.

She had sublet two rooms in the three-bedroom apartment for ₦700,000 each.

When the landlord confronted her, she replied,

"You gave me the apartment for two years. I thought I was free to use it however I wanted."

The landlord asked her to vacate.

Instead, she sued him, relying on the two-year rent receipt he had issued her free of charge.
