𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻��𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗺𝘆 𝟮𝟬 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲

After 20+ years in engineering, I've learned a few lessons I wish someone had told me earlier.

𝟭. 𝗗𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗱𝗼 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

You will not replace that component with another one in the future so that you won't need an abstraction now.

𝟮. 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝘁𝘄𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝗱𝗲

If you're unsure whether you need that line of code, don't include it. The best code is no code.

𝟯. 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀

- Clean Code (easier to read and maintain)
- Design patterns (solve common problems)
- SOLID (manage complexity better)
- Architecture (scalable, maintainable solutions)

𝟰. 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁

Don't overcomplicate stuff. Go with simple and easy-to-understand solutions. We are, in any case, in a very complex space here.

𝟱. 𝗡𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗹𝘆

Good naming reduces confusion, speeds up reviews, and saves hours of debugging. Always think from the reader’s perspective.

𝟲. 𝗧𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗱𝗲

Unit, integration, e2e, whatever the project demands. Tests allow confident changes and help you design better code. TDD sharpens thinking, even if you don’t use it every time.

𝟳. 𝗞𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗹𝘆. 𝗜𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲.

Protect deep focus by reducing interruptions. Turn off notifications.

Establish at least one non-meeting day each week.

Prioritize tasks clearly (use the Eisenhower Matrix).

𝟴. 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲, 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲, 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲

Pair and mob programming can replace lengthy code reviews and improve collective ownership. Clear communication aligns teams and simplifies complex problems.

𝟵. 𝗗𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻, 𝗱𝗼

Learn when you need something or just before.

Actively apply knowledge. Without doing so, you’ll quickly forget.

𝟭𝟬. 𝗕𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘁, 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲

Your first solution rarely stays optimal. Iterate, seek feedback, and continuously improve.

𝟭𝟭. 𝗗𝗼𝗰𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀

Document key design decisions and assumptions. Future you and your teammates will thank you.

Haven't made a hot take in a while so here goes.

Some of ya'll listen to all the wrong people. You're enthralled and entranced by flashy visuals and cute-sounding phrases but the ability to actually change your life for the better is seldom found in either.

Meanwhile there is actual actionable-value being shared continually by well-meaning people of substance and accomplishment and so often they're never the cool kids on the block on your timeline. For instance, I just left a seriously insighful livestream detailing real, solid, achievable game plans for wealth creation around tech and per usual it was just lightly attended ... maybe 50 people of so.

TLDR: Choose your circles wisely 🤷🏾‍♂️
