Ketika sebuah webtoon diadaptasi menjadi drama, lalu beberapa bagian ceritanya diubah, kira-kira author aslinya merasa kecewa nggak, sih? 👀

Ada contoh menarik dari Lee Dong-gun, author Yumi’s Cells.

Saat Yumi’s Cells diadaptasi ke drama, Lee justru memilih untuk tidak terlalu ikut campur dalam proses kreatif. Ia menganggap drama sebagai medium yang berbeda dari webtoon, sehingga tim drama juga perlu punya ruang untuk membuat interpretasi mereka sendiri.

Bahkan, perubahan yang dibuat bukan cuma hal kecil. Salah satu yang cukup signifikan adalah hubungan Yumi dan Babi. Dalam versi webtoon, hubungan mereka berakhir setelah Babi tertarik pada perempuan lain. Namun, tim drama memilih mengubah bagian tersebut agar alur hubungan mereka bisa berkembang secara berbeda dan penonton masih memiliki harapan terhadap hubungan Yumi & Babi.

Karena perubahan itu cukup besar, tim produksi kemudian meminta izin dan persetujuan dari Lee Dong-gun.

Dan responsnya justru menunjukkan seberapa besar kepercayaannya kepada tim adaptasi. Lee pada dasarnya mengatakan bahwa ia tidak keberatan dan mempersilakan mereka melakukan apa yang mereka anggap perlu untuk versi drama.

Dalam wawancara lainnya, Lee juga menjelaskan bahwa ia memilih menikmati Yumi’s Cells sebagai penonton. Menurutnya, adaptasi drama adalah ranah kreativitas yang berbeda, sehingga ia tidak merasa harus mengontrol bagaimana ceritanya diterjemahkan ke layar.

Jadi, buat Lee, adaptasi bukan berarti membuat ulang webtoonnya dengan bentuk yang 100% sama. Ia menjelaskan bahwa adaptasi drama adalah “another realm of creativity”.

Ia sudah punya versi ceritanya sendiri melalui webtoon, sementara drama punya kesempatan untuk menghadirkan interpretasi baru melalui penulis skenario, sutradara, dan para aktor.
