Jankare’s downfall: How an armed enforcer’s reign ended in violent internal feud

The rise and eventual downfall of Jankare, popularly known as “Jan Kare Uban Alfahari,” has continued to attract attention following his reported death in a violent internal dispute with another armed actor several months ago.

Jankare was known for his frequent appearances in the media, where he reportedly projected an image of strength, boasting about his influence and displaying weapons believed to be in his possession.

His public posture, according to accounts circulating about his activities, portrayed him as a powerful and feared figure who believed he could intimidate others through his reputation, connections and access to weapons.

However, the image of invincibility eventually came to an end when a dispute reportedly erupted between him and another armed individual.

The disagreement escalated into a violent confrontation that resulted in Jankare’s death, bringing to an abrupt end the activities of a man who had built his reputation around fear, weapons and intimidation.

His reported downfall has since been cited by observers as another example of the dangers associated with violent networks, where disputes among armed actors can quickly turn against members of the same group.

The circumstances surrounding his death also underscore a recurring pattern in conflict environments: individuals who accumulate weapons and influence outside lawful structures can eventually become victims of the same violence they help sustain.

VIDEO: Nigeria Records First Tele-Robotic Surgery As Surgeon Operates On Abuja Patient From Ogun

Nigeria has recorded its first tele-robotic surgery, with a surgeon remotely performing a complex kidney cancer operation on a patient in Abuja from Mowe, Ogun State.

The procedure, a robot-assisted right radical nephrectomy to remove a cancerous kidney tumour, was conducted by Redeemer’s Health Village in collaboration with RoboMed Global. The surgeon operated the robotic system in real time from a Toumai console at the facility in Ogun State, while the patient was at Nisa Premier Hospital in Abuja, about 500 kilometres away.

OPERATION HADIN KAI CLARIFIES RECIRCULATED 2016 AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL REPORT ON GIWA BARRACKS

The attention of Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), has been drawn to the recirculation of an old report attributed to Amnesty International, alleging death of detainees, including children, died at Giwa Barracks, Maiduguri. The report, which dates back to 2016, concerns allegations relating to detention conditions during that period and has no connection with events or conditions at the facility in 2026. Its current recirculation without the appropriate historical context is therefore misleading and capable of creating the false impression that the reported deaths are recent occurrences.

For clarity, the Amnesty International report was published in May 2016 and the figures contained therein relate to alleged deaths recorded between January and May of that year. While the report represents Amnesty International’s account of events at the time, its contents should not be presented as a current development, fact, or used to characterise the prevailing situation at the facility a decade later.

In this regard, Headquarters OPHK urges media organisations, online platforms and members of the public to exercise due diligence when reproducing archival reports, particularly those concerning sensitive security and humanitarian matters. Such reports should be accompanied by their original dates and relevant context to ensure that historical allegations are not inadvertently presented as current events or used to generate unnecessary public apprehension.

Meanwhile, the Joint Investigation Centre at Giwa Barracks continues to operate in accordance with extant Nigerian laws, established procedures and applicable international standards. The Centre places emphasis on the welfare, lawful treatment and rehabilitation of detainees, including access to necessary care, skills acquisition and vocational training, as well as Western and Islamic education. The Centre also maintains engagement with relevant humanitarian and human rights organisations, while access has been granted to national and international media organisations in 2026 to observe its activities and prevailing conditions.

Accordingly, OPHK reiterates its commitment to professional conduct, respect for applicable laws and standards, and the continuous improvement of the management and welfare of persons in its custody. The Joint Task Force remains focused on the effective discharge of its mandate to restore lasting peace and normalcy across the North East through sustained and professionally conducted operations.

The public is therefore encouraged to verify the date, source and context of security related reports before accepting or sharing them, particularly when such reports concern events from previous years. OPHK further calls on media organisations to uphold responsible and accurate reporting by clearly distinguishing historical reports from current developments in the North East.

He did not start at the top.

His journey began as a young boy in uniform at the Air Force Military School, Jos.

From there came the Nigerian Defence Academy and the 41st Regular Combatant Course.

In September 1994, he was commissioned as a Pilot Officer into the Nigerian Air Force.

Then the sky became his workplace.

Over the course of his flying career, AVM Abdullahi became qualified on multiple platforms, including the L-39ZA, Dornier Do-228, C-130 Hercules and 737NG, accumulating more than 5,000 flying hours.

But his career was never confined to the cockpit.

He commanded the 301 Heavy Airlift Group and later served with the 011 Presidential Air Fleet, where he became Fleet Operations Officer and subsequently Commander.

He went on to serve as:

Five Fulani reportedly killed in targeted attack by Berom Militia near Barkin Ladi

Five Fulani men were reportedly killed after gunmen opened fire on a vehicle conveying them from Barkin Ladi towards Jos South in Plateau State.

According to preliminary information obtained by Zagazola Makama, the victims were reportedly travelling to a market when the vehicle came under attack close to a security checkpoint along the route.

Sources said the occupants were unable to escape as the attackers opened fire on the vehicle, killing all five persons inside.

The identities of the deceased and the precise circumstances surrounding the incident were still being verified as of the time of filing this report.

The incident comes amid continuing targeted attacks and reprisal by both the Fulani and local communities in part of Plateau state.

Their father was working at Shagalinku Restaurant but was recently laid off.
