I was on transit when I overheard a woman happily telling someone that she had bought a bottle of original honey for just $4.

She was so excited that she had gotten genuine honey at such a cheap price. I just laughed quietly to myself because my mother also sells honey, and a bottle of the same size costs around $10 from her.

I didn’t say anything because I didn’t want to embarrass her. But honestly, it reminded me that we have to be careful when buying things simply because they are cheap.

My Starbucks visits aren't elaborate. Quick in, quick out. The kids behind the counter know me and start pulling the espresso when I walk in. First visit of the morning is always two doppios: one for there, one to go.

I don’t go around announcing I’m a doctor. But a while back, one of the girls asked. She’d recognised me from when a relative of hers was admitted. Since then they make a little small talk.

You have to understand, these are 20 something kids working their asses off to pay for PG accommodations and send money back to their hometowns. I respect that, so I indulge the chatter.

A few months ago, one of them showed me her swollen legs. She’d had an accident earlier and assumed the swelling was from standing all day post the surgery. I took a look. It wasn't soft tissue swelling. She was already fair complexioned but she looked anaemic. I wrote a few blood tests on a piece of paper and told her to get them done.

She got it done a few days later. Her haemoglobin was pitifully low. She needed at least two units of blood, which meant hospitalisation. No other choice. She was panicking. She couldn't go back to her hometown for treatment, her parents didn't have the money and if she went, they wouldn't let her return to the city to work.

I suggested a government hospital. She was running out her thoughts aloud: ‘I can’t afford your hospital. I can’t go to a government one either, because there’s no one to be with me. My friends are working and I can’t ask them to take leave and be with me’. I told her to think about it and left.

She asked if there was any other way out. There wasn't. So, I arranged for her treatment at my hospital, free of charge. She broke down and cried. I told her to chill and that it wasn't coming out of my pocket. She recovered and went back to work.

This morning, I walk in as usual and she looked emotional. Turns out, she’s quitting at the end of the month. She is going back to her native place to get married. An arranged one. Happened entirely too fast, and completely out of her control.

I said, ‘All the best’ took my coffee and left.
I couldn't stop thinking about it. You can fix someone's hemoglobin but you can’t fix their circumstances. It makes you wonder if most people even have a choice in their own lives.
