13.3%.
That's the increase in brand mention rate Vibe saw on its focus topic after fixing a gap: the sources outside its own website.
"Answer engines mostly aren't citing you about you," said Georgette Gallagher, who owns SEO and AEO at Vibe. "They're citing third parties, and the sources shaping the answers we cared about weren't ours."
The lift came from finding which external content sources were shaping Vibe's priority AI answers, adding mentions to those sources, and doing it with enough consistency to move the number.
If your AEO program is entirely owned content, you're hitting a ceiling without knowing it.
I'm closely watching paid AI search. I think this is the clearest way to reliably measure performance in the future.

In partnership with @AirOps.
A new channel just opened up inside the answer itself, and most performance marketing teams don't have a system for it yet.
Owned content and offsite authority used to be the whole AI search program. Paid ads inside AI answers is no longer a footnote to that story. It's a channel your competitors are already testing while your team debates whether it's real.
Has your team looked into the potential of AI ads yet?
Join us for a webinar on this next week, featuring Matt Hammel (COO of AirOps) and Alex Hallenbeck (Lead Product Manager, Enterprise).

What if AI search is actually a mirror for your brand positioning?
If you're showing up in AI search in a way you don't like, you were still showing up that way in the market, but now you can just see it.

When an LLM decides whether to recommend your brand, it's weighing more than your own website. These 5 play a part:
- Owned content: the pages you control
- External content: the third-party sources agents already trust
- AI ads: the emerging paid surfaces inside AI answers
- Community: the forums and threads feeding the agent's answer
- Social and influencer: the voices shaping how AI describes your category
Most demand generation plans are still built around the first one.
The other four are where the buying conversation is actually happening, in sources your brand doesn't own and can't fully control.
Where do you need to make improvements?

Your customers may arrive at your website after asking an AI platform for recommendations, comparing solutions or researching a specific problem.
They already have context—and they expect your website to help them continue that journey.
If they encounter a traditional list of links or have to start their search over, that high-intent visit can quickly become a missed opportunity.

If 85% of your AI mentions come from sites you don't own, why is 100% of your AEO budget going to your own site?
Not your homepage. Not your product pages. Third-party sources: reviews, comparison sites, community threads, roundups you've never contacted.
Most AEO programs still start and end with the website. Refresh a page, add a stat, hope the model notices. That's only optimizing for 15% of the equation.
The other 85% requires a different kind of work: finding which third-party sources the model already trusts, and earning a better position inside them instead of building another page no one asked for.

Case studies and customer evidence give AI systems proof to draw from when buyers ask what to choose.
Our research found that customer proof is 3.5x more likely to influence decision-stage AI answers than early research-stage ones. That puts customer marketing close to the moments when buyers are making a choice.
On September 14, AirOps CMO Christy Roach joins UserEvidence for a new webinar going over what customer marketers need to know about AEO.
They'll break down findings from 1,735 cited customer-evidence pages, including:
- What customer proof AI systems pick up.
- How existing customer marketing work contributes to AI discovery.
- How to make the case for customer evidence as a driver of growth.

A new buyer journey requires a new strategy for marketers.
The buyer journey used to unfold across touch points you could optimize one by one. Now it's concentrating onto a single surface, where AI compares the options and makes a recommendation for your buyer. Winning that recommendation is now the most urgent challenge facing brands today.
Buyers are increasingly trusting AI to go beyond making recommendations and start comparing choices and taking action on their behalf. This means that the agent isn’t just a gatekeeper to your customer, they’re quickly becoming your brand's second customer, and the marketing programs you spent the last 10 years building aren’t built for them.
To win in this environment, you need more than an AI visibility tool focused on how your brand shows up in LLMs. And you need more than an agency focused on execution instead of building repeatable programs. You need a partner that helps identify your market opportunity, turns that opportunity into action, and builds a measurable growth engine that scales.
AirOps is that partner. You'll get experienced strategists and channel experts that build AI discovery programs using the intelligence and platform you need to drive results across a growing portfolio of AI channels.
