On September 28, 2026, the Afghan Institute for Strategic Studies (AISS) hosted Rumi Night in Washington at Museum of the Bible, marking the 819th anniversary of the birth of Mawlana Jalaluddin Muhammad Balkhi (Rumi). Held as the cultural component of the Third Annual Washington Darbar, the evening brought together scholars, writers, artists, musicians, and members of diverse religious and cultural communities.

An Urgent Appeal for @ben_acheson.

Ben Acheson, a friend of the AISS is living with end-stage kidney failure and urgently needs a living kidney donor.

Ben is the author of “The Pashtun Tribes in Afghanistan”, an important work on Afghanistan that AISS had the privilege of translating into Persian and introducing to a wider Persian-speaking readership.

What does this even mean? Come from within? They think the Taliban can reform?

Amartya Sen showed us that famines are the result of political calamities. The current disaster in Afghanistan is the direct consequence of Taliban rule.

Humanitarian aid should fill gaps. Afghanistan is not witnessing a temporary crisis or drought. It’s witnessing a governance disaster the likes of which the world has never seen. The Taliban can fix this easily should they choose to.

Democracies have been talking to the Taliban for decades at this point.
