Tunisian authorities must immediately and unconditionally quash the 13 April Tunis court of appeal unjust conviction and 18-month prison sentence against lawyer Sonia Dahmani for her exercise of her right to freedom of expression. Dahmani is now at imminent risk of arrest.
#Algeria: After sealing shut the office of SOS Disappeared in Algiers on 16 March, Algerian authorities have escalated their crackdown on families of victims of enforced disappearance, arbitrarily arresting at least four relatives of victims since 28 March & dispersing peaceful gatherings.
On 8 April, police dispersed an Algiers gathering of relatives of those forcibly disappeared and arrested Slimane Hamitouche of the National Coordination of the Families of the Disappeared. On 9 April, he was given a suspended 6-months prison term for “inciting to unarmed gathering".
Another relative is in pretrial detention for "reviving the wounds of the national tragedy" for posting online about his disappeared loved one while two others were briefly detained in Constantine as police threatened their relative abroad to stop his activism for truth and justice.
Authorities must cease their unlawful targeting of families of victims who have the right to advocate for truth and justice without fear of reprisals and release anyone detained for exercising their rights to peaceful assembly, association and expression.

⚠️ On 20 December 2025, Egyptian national and Danish resident Hassan El Sayed was arrested upon his arrival at Cairo International Airport. National Security Agency officials questioned him about his role in the movie The Eagles of the Republic, where he appeared very briefly as a priest. Following his arrest, he was taken before a prosecutor, who ordered his pretrial detention pending investigations into the charge of “joining a terrorist group while being aware of its objectives”. Since then, his pretrial detention in case No. 4529 of the Supreme State Security Prosecution (SSSP) has been renewed.
Call on EgyptianPPO to immediately release Hassan El Sayed and drop all charges against him as he is detained solely for the peaceful exercise of his human rights. The Egyptian authorities must allow him to safely reunite with his family in Denmark: https://t.co/p5iU2Rybw5

The forced closure of SOS Disappeared, which advocates for justice for those forcibly disappeared in the 1990s conflict, is a devastating blow to the fight for truth, justice and reparations in Algeria. https://t.co/3gwIPnkh41
Judges in Tunisia who spoke out continue to face reprisal and harassment. Anas Hmedi’s case is a stark illustration of these ongoing reprisals. link:https://t.co/F4SyL1p3vw
In recent months, the Egyptian authorities renewed their campaign of arbitrarily detaining and unlawfully deporting refugees and asylum seekers on the basis of their irregular immigration status in blatant violation of the principle of non-refoulement and Egypt’s own asylum law.
15 years after Libyans revolted against the repressive rule of Muammar al-Gaddafi, systemic impunity fuels crimes under international law and human rights violations by militias and armed groups while justice and reparations for survivors and relatives of victims remain elusive.
On 1 Feb, the Court of Appeal in Oum El Bouaghi upheld the conviction of Ali Mammeri, and reduced his prison sentence from 15 to 10 years. The court’s deeply unjust decision to uphold Ali’s conviction on baseless charges is another clear assault on peaceful dissent in Algeria.
On 2 February, a Tunis appeals court convicted at least 20 individuals, handing down prison sentences ranging from three to 35 years in “Conspiracy against State Security 2”. Rached Ghannouchi’s prison term was increased from 14 to 20 years.
Posting religious views online or taking part in discussions about belief or non-belief is not a crime! #Egypt authorities must immediately & unconditionally release 23 individuals arbitrarily detained solely for peacefully exercising their right to freedom of religion or belief.

Algerian authorities must clarify the legal basis for the return of Seifeddine Makhlouf to Tunisia on 18 January, despite his status as a registered UNHCR asylum seeker, Amnesty International said today. This return amounts to refoulement, a violation under international law.

Tunisian authorities recently arrested 34 individuals following a politically motivated sham trial, resulting in unjust convictions in the so-called ‘conspiracy case’ against people detained solely for exercising their human rights
Activist Chaima Issa has just had a 20-year prison sentence upheld by the Tunis Court of Appeal in the so-called “conspiracy case” — a trial widely condemned for its lack of transparency, political targeting, and serious violations of fair-trial standards
