The Electoral Bond list published by the ECI is a perfect example of how @BJP4India has been collecting bribes from crony industrialists, tax evaders, and criminals.

Is the Signboards Change order is new? No

1. BBMP in 2017 issued an order on the topic of Kannada in name boards. The State government and the BBMP have often issued directives under Section 24A of the Karnataka Shops and Establishments Act, 1961, asking commercial establishments to ensure signboards in Kannada.

2. However, in 2018, a directive by the BBMP on Kannada boards in Bengaluru was challenged in the High Court. The reason was the legal grounds for such directives were weak and a 2014 directive was struck down by the Karnataka High Court in the same year.

3. After winning the legal battle, On Nov 1st 2019, The order was given again, but it was not strictly implemented in the city. One of the reasons is that in the following months, the BBMP council was also dissolved, which led to there being no Mayor or council. No one was bothered about implementing the signage rule, and the order was sidelined.

4. In Sep 2022, The Karnataka government tabled the ‘Kannada Language Comprehensive Development Bill’ in the state Assembly and In Feb 2023, Bill was adopted by the Karnataka Legislative Assembly.

5. In Dec 2023, The commissioner of Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike has said that by February 28, commercial stores under the administrative body need to install 60% Kannada language nameplates, which, if failing to do so, will attract legal action.

BBMP has been issuing orders to follow the rules for the past six years. Over the last few months, a campaign has been actively urging compliance with the government's regulations. [TheHindu, TOI]
