🔥Phantom League Event Conclusion Notice & Developers Commentary
*(Contains Chapter 9 Spoilers)
The Phantom League event has officially come to an end!
Since this was an update we had been preparing for a long time, we were always eager to share it with players as soon as possible. We still clearly remember how anxious and excited we were during the process.
This event brought many changes compared to previous ones. The most noticeable was that, unlike before, two new S rank characters were introduced.
New S Rank Players
After much internal discussion, we decided to release only two new S rank characters for this event.
As soon as the story planning was finalized, Jenny and Elio were the characters who immediately came to mind. Rather than creating additional players just to fill out the roster, we chose to focus on the narrative and design characters who were meaningful, impactful, and interesting.
There were mixed opinions after the update. However, going forward, instead of guaranteeing multiple new S rank characters with every event, we plan to concentrate on fewer characters, giving each one more depth and uniqueness.
We’re putting a great deal of thought into designing players who can offer more interesting and distinct experiences, regardless of their in-game performance.
About the Story
This chapter was drastically different in tone from previous ones — it was extremely serious, almost a complete 180 in atmosphere.
To be honest, even right before release, we spent a lot of time debating whether this direction was truly okay. We considered both a much milder version and a much more intense one.
In the end, we think we found a good middle ground, and with Chapter 9, the game's rating has officially changed from All Ages” to “12 and up.”
The story of Phantom League had actually been discussed internally since the early planning stages of the Colosseum, so it’s naturally connected to the Colosseum players and brings together many existing characters. It feels like the moment when the story really begins to expand in scale.
If Chapters 1 through 6 can be considered “Part 1” of the story, then Chapter 9 marks the true beginning of “Part 2.”
We’re working closely with our scenario writer to plan out what's ahead, and we’re preparing stories that will not only be exciting but also bring out the charm of the existing characters even more.
About Jenny
Jenny was a character whose ability was planned before her personality. The development process followed this order: ability → story → character design — all aligned to fit the narrative.
Player injuries have been mentioned in The Spike for quite some time, and with this event, we wanted to finally depict them properly.
What heavily influenced Jenny’s ankle injury storyline…
(Comment by OSIK) "…was my own experience. During the last tournament, I twisted my ankle upon landing and ended up tearing a ligament.
Experiencing that injury firsthand made me reflect deeply, and I believe it was then that I became certain about how I wanted to conclude Chapter 9."
About Raul
Finally, the third of the “Top 5 Spikers” has been revealed!
When planning the Top 5 Spikers in The Spike, we put a great deal of thought and effort into their movements, skills, and effects to live up to the title. Raul’s spike is especially captivating because it draws power from far away and drives the ball forcefully into the court, this aspect was carefully crafted.
We made a conscious effort not to reveal any in-game footage before launch because we wanted players to be truly impressed when they saw Raul breaking through blocks and striking the opponent’s court with overwhelming power. We wanted everyone to feel, “So this is what a Top 5 Spiker is like! Nishikawa and Sarah are players of this caliber!”
Personally, We are very satisfied that Raul has come out as a striking character with a unique charm, different from Nishikawa or Ryuhyeon. we are also grateful to the art team and effects creators who greatly contributed to emphasizing Raul’s distinctive look and feel.
As the story unfolds, many truths about Raul will be revealed, so please look forward to that!
About the League Content
The league content was designed as a way to serve as a performance indicator beyond tiers within The Spike, since it’s difficult to perfectly measure a player’s skill otherwise.
In The Spike Cross, most existing content requires daily or periodic play, which made it challenging to design opponents strong enough to provide a real challenge. We thought that if players had to earn rewards every day but faced opponents who were too strong, resulting in long matches or losses, it could lead to a very frustrating experience.
Then we wondered: would the game become too monotonous? This led us to deeply reconsider future content. When reflecting on what makes The Spike Cross truly fun, it’s the moments when you face a very strong opposing team and use every possible strategy to overcome them.
This idea gave birth to the league content. When designing each league, we carefully considered the unique concepts, favorable S-rank players, and advantageous playstyles. If a player relied on a repetitive playstyle, they would definitely get stuck in the later leagues, making it difficult to progress further. This was intentional — we wanted to show that The Spike Cross offers diverse ways to play and encourages various strategies.
Now, the league has no time limits, and rewards do not disappear.
It’s natural that new players cannot clear all the way to League 10 right away. But if you take your time and enjoy the process, you will definitely be able to clear up to League 10 someday!
Once you become the strongest by clearing League 10, you might find yourself eagerly waiting for even harder leagues to come!
You might think it’s impossible to win, but our internal development team always clears every piece of content without using any S rank players during balancing tests.
Of course, it’s challenging, but if you find the right strategy, victory is always possible.
