I am pissed, Dangote recently said he imports workers from India because Nigerians don’t know how to operate his plant systems. I need him to say that again, slowly.

Me and 7 of my guys use and chew these exact softwares daily. Let me break down what runs Dangote Cement and who actually knows this stack and flex my knowledge a bit:

SAP ERP is the brain of the entire operation. It tracks every bag of cement from raw limestone to the truck leaving the gate. Inventory, procurement, finance, payroll, all of it running in one system. We use it.

SAP HANA is the database engine under SAP. It processes millions of records in real time so management can make decisions without waiting 4 hours for a report. It is the reason their finance team is not still using Excel. We use it.

SAP Ariba handles procurement. Every vendor, every supply contract, every purchase order flows through Ariba before a kobo leaves the company. We use it.

OpenText ECM manages documents. Engineering drawings, compliance certificates, invoices, all stored, tracked and retrieved digitally. Without it they are drowning in paper. We use it.

AutoCAD designs the physical plant. Every kiln, conveyor belt and silo you see at Obajana was drawn on AutoCAD before a single brick was laid. We use it.

Nutanix is the infrastructure layer. It is what keeps SAP HANA running without crashing. The server backbone behind everything. We know it.

Freshdesk manages internal and customer support tickets. Azure SQL stores structured data. Veritas NetBackup makes sure nothing gets lost if a server dies.

We know all of it.

So when Dangote says he cannot find Nigerians who understand his systems, the question is not whether we exist. The question is whether he is looking, or whether he already decided where to look before he started.

TWO TRACTOR OPERATORS DI£D WITHIN TWO YEARS... THE THIRD ONE RAN AWAY

There are some experiences in agriculture that never leave your memory.

After one cropping season, management gave all staff a break for the festive period. Everyone went home happy, expecting to resume work in the new year.

When work resumed, our most experienced tractor operator, Awwal, was nowhere to be found.

His phone was not going through.

I called my boss and asked after him. He assured me he would find a way to reach him.

A few days later, my boss called me.

"Ezekiel... Awwal is gone."

I was speechless.

According to his wife, he had complained of severe stomach pains before passing away days later.

The entire farm was thrown into mourning.

We contributed money among ourselves, and the head office in Abuja also supported the family for his burial.

Life had to continue.

A replacement operator was employed, and because the farm had acquired another tractor, two operators were brought in.

A few months later, one of them, Ilayi, started complaining of serious stomach pains.

At first, I thought it was ulcer.

But the pain became worse.

I gave him some days off to seek treatment.

Two days later, I visited his house only to be told he had been rushed to the General Hospital.

When I got there, he was writhing in pain.

The doctors carried out tests and scans but couldn't immediately identify the cause.

Two days later...

Ilayi dîêd.

At that moment, I became deeply worried.

Two tractor operators.

Two deaths.

Similar complaints.

The same stomach pains.

Something didn't feel right.

We buried him.

The farm owner gave him a befitting burial, placed his three children on scholarship, and supported his wife with money to start a business.

To this day, those children are still benefiting from that scholarship.

A new operator, Galoma, was later employed.

One day, he called me aside.

"Manager, some people are not happy this farm is growing."

I looked at him in surprise.

"Why?"

He said some villagers feared that as the farm expanded, they might eventually lose access to land or influence in the area.

Whether that fear was justified or not, I honestly don't know.

But it made me realize something important:

People can misunderstand your intentions, no matter how good they are.

As the season progressed, Yahaya—the other operator employed alongside the late Ilayi—suddenly became seriously ill.

This time, it wasn't stomach pain.

It started with persistent hiccups and health complications.

His family quickly took him away for treatment.

Thankfully, he recovered.

But immediately after recovering, he resigned and never returned to the farm.

That was the day I learned one of the biggest lessons of my agricultural career.

Before establishing a large-scale farm in any community:

(1) Carry the people along.
(2) Build trust with the villagers.
(3) Engage community leaders.
(4( Create opportunities for locals.
(5) Maintain good relationships with your host community.
(5) Never assume everyone understands your intentions.

A farm can have money.

A farm can have tractors.

A farm can have investors.

But without community acceptance, peace of mind can become your most expensive input.

Agriculture is not only about crops and livestock.

It is also about people.

And sometimes, managing relationships is harder than managing a 1,000-hectare farm.

May the souls of Awwal and Ilayi continue to rest in peace.

In Nigeria, many people believe that once a land has a Certificate of Occupancy (C of O), the owner has automatically won every possible land battle forever.

But the law is not that simple.

A C of O is powerful, yes.
But it is not bulletproof.

Under Nigerian law, a person can still lose land covered by a Certificate of Occupancy if another person proves a better title to the land.

This shocks many people because they think:
“No C of O means no ownership.”

That is not always true.

The court does not only look at who has the document.
The court also looks at:

- Who truly owned the land first,
- How the land was acquired,
- Whether the land was properly transferred,
- Whether fraud was involved,
- Whether the government was misled before issuing the C of O.

Imagine this:

A family owns a large piece of ancestral land for decades.

Someone secretly sells part of that land without proper authority.

The buyer rushes and obtains a Certificate of Occupancy.

Years later, the real owners challenge the transaction in court and successfully prove that the seller had no right to sell the land in the first place.

In that situation, the court can still cancel the C of O.

This is because a defective title cannot suddenly become valid simply because a certificate was issued.

In simple English:
If the foundation is bad, the document standing on it can collapse too.

This is why smart land buyers do more than just ask:
“Does it have C of O?”

They also investigate:

- The history of the land,
- The original owners,
- Existing disputes,
- Family claims,
- Court cases,
- Government acquisition issues,
- And whether the documents are genuine.

A Certificate of Occupancy is important.
But due diligence is even more important.

Many people have beautiful documents for land they legally do not own.

Land law in Nigeria is deeper than paperwork.
