Usually you can answer "good" "great" but if you don't feel so well you can be honest and say stuff like "tired" or "I think I caught a cold". Just remember to ask "and you?"
(Most people answer "good, and you?" Without really thinking. There is a type of "what's up?" And "how are you" That people say when they see each other in the hallway and they don't really expect an answer. It's more like "hello")
