1. 1. भीष्म पितामह (Bhishma pitamah)

भीष्म पितामह को महाभारत का सबसे प्रमुख पात्र कहा जाए तो गलत नहीं होगा क्योंकि भीष्म ही महाभारत के एकमात्र ऐसे पात्र थे, जो प्रारंभ से अंत तक इसमें बने रहे। भीष्म के पिता राजा शांतनु व माता देवनदी गंगा थीं। भीष्म का मूल नाम देवव्रत था। राजा शांतनु जब सत्यवती पर मोहित हुए तब अपने पिता की इच्छा पूरी करने के लिए देवव्रत ने सारी उम्र ब्रह्मचारी रह कर हस्तिनापुर की रक्षा करने की प्रतिज्ञा ली और सत्यवती को ले जाकर अपने पिता को सौंप दिया। पिता शांतनु ने देवव्रत को इच्छा मृत्यु का वरदान दिया। देवव्रत की इस भीषण प्रतिज्ञा के कारण ही उनका नाम भीष्म प्रसिद्ध हुआ।

🔹पांड��ों को बताया था अपनी मृत्यु का रहस्य

युद्ध में जब पांडव भीष्म को पराजित नहीं कर पाए तो उन्होंने जाकर भीष्म से ही इसका उपाय पूछा। तब भीष्म पितामह ने बताया कि तुम्हारी सेना में जो शिखंडी है, वह पहले एक स्त्री था, बाद में पुरुष बना। अर्जुन शिखंडी को आगे करके मुझ पर बा��ों का प्रहार करे। वह जब मेरे सामने होगा तो मैं बाण नहीं चलाऊंगा। इस मौके का फायदा उठाकर अर्जुन मुझे बाणों से घायल कर दे। पांडवों ने यही युक्ति अपनाई और भीष्म पितामह पर विजय प्राप्त की। युद्ध समाप्त होने के 58 दिन बाद जब सूर्यदेव उत्तरायण हो गए तब भीष्म ने अपनी इच्छा से प्राण त्यागे।
