Go back to the villages that raised us.

Kingeero. Githunguri. Murang’a. Kabathi.

The same soil that once produced clergymen, presidents, farmers, industry captains, the men who built this nation.

This is the ground that gave us Bishop Obadiah Kariuki, the herds-boy who became Kenya’s first African bishop.

Dr. Julius Gikonyo Kiano, a trader’s son from Murang’a who came home with the first PhD this country ever held.

J.M. Kariuki. Kenneth Matiba. Men who walked out of these huts and bent the history of a nation.

I went looking for their grandchildren.

I found the villages empty.

No children playing. No youth in the fields.

The only young people were in the shopping centres, and most of them were drunk before noon, staring through us like the lights behind their eyes had gone out.

When we spoke the name of Jesus, some of them flinched. Others ran.

Many told us plainly that they now worship “ngomi”, the spirits of the dead and that the faith which raised their grandfathers is a colonial virus they intend to bury by 2050.

This is the same faith that civilised a generation.

That turned herdsmen’s sons into bishops, scholars and presidents.

And now it is mocked as a foreign disease by the very people it lifted out of the dust.

Look at what that rejection has cost us.

Men past 40, unmarried, with no wish to marry.

Married men who live in the drinking den instead of the home.

Our fertility has fallen below replacement.

Schools across central Kenya are merging because there are no longer enough children to fill them.

A whole community is quietly closing shops and calling it a return to roots.

Here is the part that should keep us awake at night: nobody conquered the Kikuyu.

No army. No famine. No enemy at the gate.

We did this to ourselves.

We drank away our own future and dressed the ruin up as heritage.

The devil did not break down the door.

We held it open and welcomed him in.

But a people who fell asleep can still be woken.

The villages that made us can be reached again, if those of us who left will find the will to carry the gospel back to them.

The men who prospered and moved to the city are the very ones who must now return to the ground they grew from.

The devil is loud in our backyard.

The only question left is whether good men will keep doing nothing🙏🏾
