NEWS | Israel admitted its forces fired on ambulances in Rafah last Sunday, killing possibly all 15 rescue workers out for a rescue mission, and destroying emergency response vehicles, including a Palestine Red Crescent ambulance. The military claimed it targeted “suspicious vehicles” but later acknowledged they were ambulances and fire trucks.

Gaza’s Civil Defense reported that six rescuers sent to help the wounded went missing. Their team leader’s body was later found, and their vehicles — including an ambulance and a firefighting vehicle — were destroyed, with one vehicle from the Palestine Red Crescent Society reduced “to a pile of scrap metal.” Nine paramedics from the PRCS assisting with the rescue on Sunday are also missing for the last seven days.

Hamas spokesman Basem Naim condemned the attack as a “a deliberate and brutal massacre against Civil Defense and Palestinian Red Crescent teams in the city of Rafah.”

“The targeted killing of rescue workers — who are protected under international humanitarian law — constitutes a flagrant violation of the Geneva Conventions and a war crime,” he said.

UN humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher said, “Patients killed in their hospital beds. Ambulances shot at. First responders killed … If the basic principles of humanitarian law still count, the international community must act while it can to uphold them.”
