Let’s be very clear: there is value in automating tedious and repetitive and dangerous tasks; there is value in delegating certain work to our machines that can do the work tirelessly and much faster.
But at the same time, let us remember that there is value in the activity of engaging one’s mind and body to discover, to understand, to create, and yes, even to struggle and overcome. Indeed, these are some of the things that make us human, that contribute to giving us meaning, that are part of the simple joy of experiencing being alive.
People who say “Books can’t teach you anything” have obviously never read Middlemarch. George Eliot’s perceptive powers are stunning; she seems to have seen and understood every aspect of human behavior. You will learn more from her than from a million self-help books.
I find Gmail’s new “write this for me” feature deeply sinister. They’re trying to convince you that you are dumb and helpless. Don’t let them steal your ability to formulate thoughts and communicate. You were capable of writing an email in 2022 and you’re capable now.
Beyond math/coding, another skill that jumps out to me as being insanely useful and relatively straightforward to train is writing.
Not just grammar syntax, but also creating a hook, keeping it punchy but not corny, making a smooth transition into elaborating on the hook, building narrative momentum, keeping it relatable, etc.
It's amazing how much attention a well-crafted piece of writing can attract, how many lucky opportunities can arise as a result, and how many people with interesting experiences miss out on all that due to weak writing skills.
Now I'm not saying anyone can be the next Hemingway, but I do think lots of people have weak writing chops relative to the amount of interesting knowledge/experiences they've accumulated, and that they stand to benefit from seriously training up their writing.
I also don't claim to be an expert writer myself, but I have leaned into writing the past couple years, I've experienced serious improvement, and it's been paying off in spades.
No offense but I think we underestimate how many of our current problems, both cultural and political, are downstream of the decline in reading, the decline in learning and the loss of interest in the humanities.
One of my favorite lessons I’ve learnt from working with smart people:
Action produces information. If you’re unsure of what to do, just do anything, even if it’s the wrong thing. This will give you information about what you should actually be doing.
Sounds simple on the surface - the hard part is making it part of your every day working process.
