Three years ago, I asked a group of friends and colleagues to follow me down an insanely ambitious idea for a documentary series… for the chance that maybe one day, it might end up on Netflix.
I’m indebted to every single one of them as I announce that this collective dream has come true. On June 20th, our documentary series “The Root of the Game” will premiere worldwide on Netflix!
This series is a love letter to Brazilian football, to the favela communities, and to the people whose stories are rarely told—but who are the soul of what this game truly means.
There’s so much more to come (and I promise to be better about posting more 😬!!) - but I wanted to first just say ‘thank you,’ to every single person who has believed in my career and in this project. Thank you to Netflix and specifically Elisa Chalfon, who has believed in this project from the very beginning!
More soon!
Playing long games with friends is one of life's great cheat codes.
My friend @AlecCutter's dream was to become a filmmaker and tell stories about football that have never reached the masses.
Years ago, he pitched me on Várzea: the underground football league in the favelas of São Paulo that birthed countless Brazilian stars. He spent months building the trust required to earn the privilege to bring his camera into these communities and tell a story he was convinced would one day end up on a platform like Netflix.
...he was right!
On June 20th, Alec's self-proclaimed "love letter to Brazilian football" will premiere globally on Netflix. I’m grateful I got to play a small part in helping Alec make his dream a reality.
We hope you love the trailer. Even if you don't care too much for football, this is a story about sports and life that we think will resonate with just about anyone.
PRA CHEGAR NO PROFISSIONAL, PRIMEIRO PRECISA PASSAR PELA VÁRZEA. ⚽
Várzea: Onde Nasce o Futebol, novo documentário sobre os bastidores dos campeonatos de várzea do Brasil, estreia dia 20 de junho.

Precision 🎯 in every part of the pitch, just don’t tell Estevão Willian how to get there. Go exactly where you want, and go with joy - play creatively.
A precisão 🎯 depende do resultado, mas o Estevão Willian consegue chegar lá de formas que você nem imagina.

Thousands gathered in front of the home of Pelé’s mother - who is still alive at 100 years old. Pelé’s sister, Maria Lúcia, greeted us and explained her mother was inside and not feeling well. People sang and shouted messages of love - with the hope it would reach Pelé’s mother.
Thousands lined the streets as Pelé's coffin was taken through Santos, allowing fans one more chance to view its most famous son.
We were there to experience the funeral first-hand, to witness what a player like Pelé — 46 years since retirement — still means to his people.
