Sudanese Refugee Who Attempted To Behead Local Man In Belfast Appears In Court.

In a case that has shocked Northern Ireland and reignited fierce debate over immigration and asylum policies, a 30-year-old Sudanese man granted refugee status in the UK appeared in court this morning charged with the attempted murder of a local man in North Belfast.

Hadi Alodid, of Duncairn Avenue in north Belfast, appeared at Belfast Magistrates Court via video link. The court heard graphic details of the attack on Monday evening that left his victim, Stephen Ogilvy, a man in his 40s, with devastating, life-changing injuries, including the complete loss of his left eye.

Prosecutors described how Alodid straddled the defenceless victim on the ground on Kinnaird Avenue and repeatedly slashed him in the head, neck, face and back with a kitchen knife in what witnesses described as an attempt to behead him. Members of the public, including one wielding a hurling stick, intervened to pull the attacker off until police arrived.

Appearing with an Arabic interpreter, Alodid, who entered the UK in 2023 via Paris and Dublin before claiming asylum, made no reply to the charges. He refused legal representation and was remanded in custody for four weeks, next appearing on July 8.

He faces three charges, attempted murder of Steven Ogilvy, possession of a knife in a public place, and threats to kill an NHS radiographer allegedly made on the same day.

Mr Ogilvy remains in hospital. His family is said to be completely devastated. Alodid was given leave to remain in the UK until 2028 after his asylum claim and had legal status in Northern Ireland.

The shocking footage of the attack, which spread rapidly online, triggered a night of disorder on Tuesday as masked groups targeted areas believed to house immigrants. Vehicles were set ablaze, homes attacked, a bus torched, and police officers injured amid chaotic scenes in parts of Belfast.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Northern Ireland leaders including First Minister Michelle O’Neill, and others have condemned the violence, urging calm and letting justice take its course.

Police have stressed there is no terror link, describing it as a brutal but isolated incident. Extra resources have been deployed.

Das 44 Jahre alte Opfer, ein laut Medienberichten Gehörloser, stammt ursprünglich aus Schottland und lebte in derselben Wohnanlage wie sein Angreifer, berichtete die „Daily Mail“. Warum der Schwarzafrikaner auf ihn losging, war zunächst weiter unklar.
