I know some of my takes on this won’t be popular, but here’s how I see it.
right now, most of the game dev community sees AI in a bad light. use it anywhere in your game and people call it lazy, low effort, “AI slop.” some devs won’t even admit they use it because of the backlash. a lot of artists see it as theft, and a lot of devs see it as cheating.
some of those concerns are fair. but I think this mindset is going to leave a lot of talented people behind.
in traditional software, AI is mostly helping big companies do more with fewer people. game dev is going to go the other way.
individuals are going to start replacing companies.
the gap between one person and a full studio is shrinking fast. art, code, animation, music, testing — stuff that used to need a team of 50 is getting within reach of one person with a clear vision.
if you’re creative and you use AI, it can speed up your progress 100x. prototype in a day instead of a month. test 10 ideas instead of 1. spend your time on what actually matters: making it fun.
AI doesn’t give you taste. it doesn’t know what makes a game feel good. that part is still you. it just removes the walls between your idea and a playable game.
I think GTA 6 will mark the shift. it’ll be one of the last massive AAA releases built the old way, by a giant studio, over a decade, with thousands of people.
the next wave of AAA-level games won’t come from big companies. it’ll come from hungry individuals and tiny teams who are relentless, work hard and use every tool available.
this isn’t the end of game dev. it’s the end of needed major studios to make AAA or good games.
