می‌گویند خداوند، که بی‌کران و جاودانه بود، در تنهایی مطلق خسته شد. پس تصمیم گرفت بازی کند؛ بازی «فراموشی».

خداوند خودش را به خواب برد و رؤیای جهان را دید. در این رؤیا، به میلیون‌ها صورت تقسیم شد: به من، به تو، به کوه‌ها و دریاها، به مرگ و تولد.
او چنان غرق این بازی شد که فراموش کرد خودش همان آگاهی واحد است. شروع کرد به ترسیدن، به جنگیدن، به عاشق شدن، به رنج بردن.

اما گاهی ــ در سکوتی ژرف یا در لحظه‌ای از عشق ــ یادش می‌آید:
«آه… همه‌ی اینها رؤیاست. من همانم که رؤیا را می‌بیند. من هرگز جدا نبودم.»

این قصه در حقیقت سرگذشت ماست. هر کدام از ما همان آگاهی بی‌کرانیم که خود را در لباسی محدود بازی می‌دهد. مرگ، تولد، رنج و شادی، همه لحظه‌هایی از یک رؤیای بزرگ‌اند. و بیداری معنوی یعنی لحظه‌ای که به یاد می‌آوری: تو خودِ رؤیابینی، نه فقط نقش درون رؤیا.

اوشو می‌گفت: در آغاز، خدا تنها بود.
او همه‌چیز بود، اما تجربه‌ای نداشت. چون برای تجربه‌کردن، «دیگری» لازم است.
پس خدا تصمیم گرفت خود را تقسیم کند:
به آسمان و زمین، به روز و شب، به مرد و زن، به هزاران موجود.
بعد خودش را در این موجودات پنهان کرد، تا بتواند از چشم‌هایشان جهان را ببیند، با قلب‌هایشان عشق بورزد، با دردهایشان گریه کند.
این‌گونه شد که خدا به بازی «زندگی» تن داد:
خودش را گم کرد، تا لذتِ دوباره پیدا شدن را بچشد.

هر بار که انسانی بیدار می‌شود، هر بار که کسی عشق را لمس می‌ک��د، هر بار که دستی به مهربانی باز می‌شود… خدا بخشی از خودش را دوباره به یاد می‌آورد.
