I had a very similar challenge of a book about Sally Ride when I worked in NJ. Which is just to say that though it’s easy to write off challenges like this as crazy Florida shit, it is a fight for all of us, everywhere.
Shane Syfrett, assistant superintendent of academic services, defended its inclusion on school shelves, saying getting rid of it would "limit all students & families from accessing this material freely when it may only be objectionable to some families." https://t.co/ubGnA7pnvC
Hooray for Hot Dog! I still can’t really believe I had the opportunity to be part of the 2023 Caldecott committee. This has been hard work and wonderful work and it has been one of the greatest experiences ever.

Getting over some non-covid sickness that knocked me out for the past five days. I feel about 98% better but I still just want to lay in bed in the dark and I can’t help but wonder if this is me needing more recovery time or my anxiety and depression perking back up.
@BrookePassy Maybe! This same kid minutes later was trying to tell me to put C in aftercare and out of the blue said “you know how you love money? Well if she’s in aftercare you can get more money.” And I was like where am I and what is even happening!
I came to read to my daughter’s class today and since this last week before break feels like it’s all Christmas all the time (it’s dress like an elf day today) I made sure to chose a Hanukkah book as one of my selections. This one boy says “oh yeah, C is a Hanukkah kid. 1/3
They are all special and beautiful. But the kids was like whatever, we all know Christmas is awesome. Fine. Christmas is great. But I really wish that our public schools toned down the Christmas stuff a little because this can be a hard week for the kids who don’t celebrate. 3/3
Yikes but the kid is five so I just correct him and say yes, she is Jewish. But he continues “Did you know Christmas is so much better than Hanukkah? It’s way more fun.” And I’m like oh here’s a teachable moment. Actually, there’s lots of holidays that happen in December. 2/3
The amount of Christmas activities going on in my child’s kindergarten classroom is out of control. And I just found her Thanksgiving crafts crumpled at the bottom of her backpack and there was a Tipi in it. I’m going to have to meet with the administration aren’t I?
Don’t know anything about astrology really but is it possible for Mercury to be in retrograde again? ‘Cause today is the Monday-est Monday in a long time.
It’s not 8 am yet and my 5yr old is screaming at the top of her lungs because I wiped pee off her legs and she “wants the pee back.”
And I was just saying that this was my favorite age! 🤦🏻♀️
@GinnyVitiello I downloaded it and it was never used. We found that it wasn’t a great way to communicate with friends because messages went unchecked for long periods of time.
This morning when I suggested that we turn off the news because the coverage of the school shooting in Texas was too upsetting for the kids my 5th grader looked up and said, “Why? Don’t school shootings happen all the time?”
@GinnyVitiello@ADL These are great resources. Thanks for posting. I’m thinking about how libraries can help teach digital literacy and media literacy, especially in early childhood.
