Ghadir Khumm was a landmark event in Islamic history that took place in 632 CE, when Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) gathered thousands of Muslims on his return from the Farewell Pilgrimage and delivered a sermon at a place called Ghadir Khumm. During this gathering, he raised the hand of Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib and declared, “For whoever I am his Mawla, Ali is his Mawla.” Shia Muslims regard this event as the Prophet’s formal designation of Imam Ali as his successor and the leader of the Muslim community after him. Ghadir is therefore celebrated as a symbol of divinely guided leadership, unity, and the continuation of the Prophet’s mission.
