Federal MPs and Ministers representing northern Somalia—Sool, Sanaag, Togdheer, and Awdal—, speaking at a press conference in Mogadishu, stressed that Somalia’s unity and territorial integrity are non-negotiable, and that the overwhelming majority of Somalis in the north reject separatism.

They underscored that no group or clan has the legitimacy to speak on behalf of all communities in northern Somalia, and that no actor can manufacture a false secessionist majority through political gerrymandering, including within both houses of the federal parliament.

They further emphasized that while all regions of Somalia have suffered from the impacts of civil war, the most extensively documented recent atrocity in northern Somalia occurred in 2023, committed by the secessionist Somaliland militia—with nearly 1,000 civilians killed, including women and children, and over 300,000 people displaced, as documented by international organizations and witnessed firsthand by northern communities on the ground.
