Robot runs 100 meters in 8.64 seconds — almost a second faster than Usain Bolt 🤖

The second World Humanoid Robot Games have ended in Beijing. The highlight of the final day: the Chinese robot Tiangong Ultra won the 100-meter final in 8.64 seconds.

That is almost a second faster than the human world record. Usain Bolt’s mark is 9.58 seconds, set in 2009. 🥇

How the record fell during the week 📉

Tiangong Ultra (developed by the Beijing Humanoid Robot Innovation Center) improved its time almost every day:

August 22, preliminary heat — 9.39 sec
August 25, semifinal — 8.86 sec
August 26, final — 8.64 sec 🔥

Last year, at the first edition of these games, the same robot ran 100 meters in 21.5 seconds. In one year, the time was more than cut in half. 🤯

In the final, all five competitors finished in under 9 seconds — faster than Bolt’s record.

The finish was spectacular again 💥

The robots still struggle to stop. After crossing the line they crash into special mats, fall, and sometimes throw sparks. Those clips, together with the time on the scoreboard, spread online even faster than the records themselves. 📹

Not just the sprint 🏃‍♂️

Over five days, robots also beat human records in other events:

400 meters — 38.15 sec (human record — 43.03)
1,500 meters — 2:21.64
standing high jump — 3.40 m ⬆️

The scale of the event was striking as well: more than 2,000 robots, 666 teams from 16 countries, 51 disciplines. The competitions were held at the National Speed Skating Oval, built for the 2022 Winter Olympics.

Comparing a robot with a human is not entirely fair: a machine does not get tired and does not have the same physical limits. But the fact is already here — a humanoid now officially runs the 100 meters faster than the fastest human in history. And it keeps getting quicker with every race. 🚀
