I'll be on a social media break all through November, possibly longer. Long overdue, and I need to turn my attention to other things. To make sure you don't miss any job leads, subscribe to the All Freelance Writing job board via email at https://t.co/vxRGAVWYDO
Fun fact: Influencer marketing is older than SEO. It's old school PR... hijacked by internet marketers... & quite often done poorly. What's "new" is the label. Kind of like the old "article marketing" or newer "content marketing". Also largely based in PR.
This has been a big pet peeve of mine over the years, bc I see too many clients & colleagues chasing fad labels w/o grasping the fundamentals. Should we explore this more in-depth on the blog? If so, I'll start a list of examples. Add more if I've missed any:
Please, please, please don't fall for this bullshit. It's all part of the insta-expert trend tearing through the freelance community in recent years. And it's NOT about helping you start, or succeed at, freelance writing.
Freelance folks... there's a certain CNBC article making the rounds with advice for freelancers. They cite less-than-reputable sources & the advice is largely bullshit. This kind of garbage is rampant in the freelance community, so please be careful.
Here's where this always goes though. Hyped up claims are being used to target those desperate to freelance & work for themselves, hoping to replicate what isn't freelance income, if it's even earned at all. Here it's a course.

Experiencing all sorts of feelings today. This morning I officially shut down one of my websites, after 17 years. It's the site I launched right before All Freelance Writing, though it wasn't my first (that's still active, though archived). It used to be one of my "Big 3."
@SHurleyHall It's sad, but sometimes things just aren't worth the effort. If there's traffic or link preservation to consider, just hold the domain and redirect. If not, no big deal to just let them slide. At least you're moving forward with meaningful work. That makes it so much easier. 😊
I'm just sharing as a reminder that sometimes running a successful business is about starting something new, and sometimes it's about knowing when to let go. Don't be afraid to let go of bad specialties, bad clients, bad brands. Letting go is what leaves you room to grow.
But there's also value in keeping the 17-year-old domain for redirects. If I weren't launching a related site soon, selling would have been the better call.
