Fuel prices rise, matatu fares jump by 50%, electricity costs increase by another Sh4.40 per kWh through new EPRA levies, rent keeps soaring, and food prices climb with every transport adjustment yet salaries remain frozen in time.

At the same time, workers are stripped through a 1.5% housing levy, 2.75% SHIF deduction, 6% NSSF contribution, and crushing PAYE rates of up to 45%, only to still fundraise for hospital bills because public systems barely function.

This is no longer an economy built for citizens; it is an extraction machine where every crisis is transferred to the ordinary Kenyan while wages remain stagnant. Tough times are slowly becoming a permanent economic condition.

It is untenable to shoulder a 1.5% housing levy, 2.75% SHIF deduction, 6% NSSF contribution, and a staggering 30-45% PAYE , only to still grapple with exorbitant school fees, skyrocketing rent, punitive fuel prices, and endless medical fundraisers because SHIF remains woefully inadequate.

William Ruto's administration has reportedly spent a staggering Sh89 billion since taking office in 2022, with State House expenditures alone accounting for a significant Sh36 billion by March 2026. This level of spending raises questions about fiscal discipline and resource allocation within the government.

The Taxes and Levies charged on fuel in Kenya constitutes about 80% of the actual cost of the product itself. The ripple effect of surges in fuel prices on overall market dynamics places an obligation on the government to make concessions, when necessary, to cushion consumers from global spikes in prices. While the reduction of VAT from 16% to 13% is one such concession, it is far from adequate in the grand scheme of things, considering Kenyans already pay the highest pump prices regionally.

The increase announced by EPRA indicates tone-deaf leadership that ignores the plight of the people. This is when the role of our parliamentarians in representation and oversight must be activated. The pain of wananchi must never go unrecognised or unresolved.

How does the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) always “lack money” for doctors, nurses, and Junior Secondary School teachers yet never for Members of Parliament?

The hypocrisy is staggering. Speaker Wetang’ula pockets KSh 25,000 every month for airtime alone, more than the entire monthly salary of a JSS teacher earning KSh 17,000. The irony is brutal: those who heal the sick and mould the nation’s children are told to be patient, to sacrifice, to wait for “better economic times.” Meanwhile, the political class fattens itself on privilege as if public funds were private inheritance.

A state that values airtime over education and indulgence over healthcare is a state that has lost its soul.

Meanwhile, the very people who employ them, the sovereign citizens of this country, are left to line up at Nyalgunga Dispensary where a doctor was last seen in 2006, and where paracetamol is rationed like contraband.

This is the Kenyan state stripped bare:
Five-star healthcare for the rulers, survival-mode improvisation for the ruled. How do leaders who swear oaths to serve the public justify living in medical comfort that rivals Dubai, while their own citizens are forced to travel 40km for an injection?
How do they celebrate SHA as a “revolution” while ensuring their own families never step foot in the facilities they impose on everyone else?
How do they justify building VIP treatment into their insurance packages while public hospitals run out of syringes?
