I don't often have call to hop on Twitter, but you all need to see this incredible art done by the imcomprable Tom Edwards https://t.co/HGPRjrogs4
He did the cover for my new book the Iron Service, coming June 2nd. Check out a free first look at here: https://t.co/GKj2VTNX02
@EmmaBriedis If Tolkien can change The Hobbit years after publication to make Bilbo's invisible ring into the One Ring, then I can change names of planets and hope nobody notices.
@McconnellEryn Best: publishing the scifi stories that 17-year-old me would’ve loved. I get giggly when I see my books on the shelf
Worst: Marketing.
Getting my book into a reader’s hands these days is like pulling out my own teeth with string and a door handle
“The best way to promote a book is writing the next book“
This is another one of those completely outdated wisdoms which are thrown around by book marketing “gurus”.
It dates back to a time 10-15 years ago when the competition among indies was so low that authors could throw out unedited books with homemade covers and make six figures.
While it is true that the more books you have out the better and the easier to make money, it is not true that all it needs to market a book is writing a new book.
If your first book doesn’t sell then the rest of the books in your series won’t sell either. And it won’t magically start selling if you don’t promote it (unless for some reason you’re super lucky and the algorithm picks you up and promotes your books for you).
In the gold rush times of indie publishing authors didn’t need to promote their books and they’d sell anyway. Back then writing the next book truly was the best way of marketing.
But selling this wisdom to newbie authors starting out now is simply wrong.
If you don’t promote your book, no one will buy it. If no one buys it, you won’t get reviews (only 5-10% of readers leave reviews).
If you don’t have reviews it’s even more difficult to sell your book.
It’s pointless to have a series of five books on Amazon where book 1 has ten reviews.
So, yes, writing the next book is important. But promoting your books that are already published is as important.
@AntonHand It may not feel like much, but your game is my roommate's very favorite thing. He and I would swap the VR headset for Take N' Hold like the ol' pass the controller days. It was like being kids again.
Never underestimate the power entertainment has to lift a spirit.
@anna_mocikat It’s stuff like this that makes me consider leaving KU and Amazon all together and just privately hosting my stuff—but that may not be an improvement
All depends on how much legitimacy Amazon maintains among consumers
So, inspired by Hank, we are in fact submitting Game Changer for an Emmy.
If you're an academy member, or know any academy members, please consider giving us your vote and/or spreading the word about our silly little show! 🙏🗳️ #emmyforgamechanger
There's hours of free entertainment here sword & sorcery, gunplay and cyborgs, and high speed chases within--including an entire novel of mine introducing you to the Capital-verse with a little side adventure.
Check out this collection of great scifi/fantasy. We're pulled together some free samples of our work to cynically hook you into buying our paid stuff!

Each trilogy is self-contained--no need to read everything to enjoy this one, but if you want to get every little Easter egg, start with Book One (also art by Tom Edwards!)

@romancelandias Space opera, found family, lots of action, queer characters—I don't think I *technically* fill the polyam requirement...but it's not-NOT true. This filled my need to have more Firefly in the world.
