The idea that PR lets in extremists is a reversal of the truth. PR gives extremists representation in proportion to votes, like anyone else. our current system allows them to gain complete control with any % of the vote as long as it’s the highest %. It could be 26% here next.

Thanks to FPTP, an ‘ultra-right’ candidate has been elected mayor of Lima, Peru with just 26% of the vote.

Now is perhaps a good time to talk about the importance of calling for PR and not just the more vague “Electoral Reform”. Electoral Reform could just mean removing the House of Lords and keeping the House of Commons voting system, which would arguably be an even worse system.

Any party winning a large majority of seats on a minority share of votes would be wrong. Maybe now a few more Conservative supporters might consider the merits of PR. PR is for all of us.

PR(STV) is not complicated. Trying to choose who to vote for under FPTP to try and keep out the candidate you least like and avoid wasting your vote when you don’t know how others will vote - that’s complicated.

If you want the proportion of women in parliament to match the proportion of votes for women, PR(STV) ensures that. Party PR systems like AMS can lead to votes for a woman being used to elect a man chosen by the party (or vice versa).

The difference is that under our current system even such coalitions don’t need a majority to govern, such as the one in 2017. What value does stability even have if the stability is one of minority rule?

@Dontdo1Hitesh @snb19692 In the UK we’ve averaged one unplanned General Election every ten years over the last century; more than the average for countries that use some form of PR. Between 1945 and 1998, countries with FPTP had more elections on average than those with some form of PR.

The ERS passed a resolution in December to campaign for PR(STV) for English local government, starting with the London Boroughs, so we look forward to the early start of the campaign.

Rhys ab Owen MS (Plaid Cymru) argues for PR(STV) for all local elections in Wales. Much the same argument applies to England. - Scotland & NI already use PR(STV).

There has never been a referendum on PR. The 2011 referendum was between two single-member systems (which cannot give PR) and Caroline Lucas’ amendment to add a proportional option was defeated. AV just adds a post to “first past the post”.

maybe it's the overwhelming referendum of the British people where the only areas to vote for PR were 6 inner London Boroughs , Oxford, Cambridge and the 2 university seats in Glasgow and Edinburgh ,dismissing that result doesn't go down well with public

Lucy Allan MP’s definition of a democracy rightly includes the requirement that all votes must be equal.

Votes in the UK aren’t.

Those who want PR have to organise and co-operate. Voting for Pro-PR candidates is not enough.

In some constituencies the majority have voted for Pro-PR candidates already, but anti-PR candidates still won.
