Fascinating woman. An outrageous flirt, though not the sexual incontinent she is usually portrayed as. Little known though is that she fell in love with a fellow American, Herman Rogers, while in China; a man who was, alas, married, and for whom she pined for the rest of her life. Wallis was eventually buried beside him at Frogmore. As Morton says in the closing paragraphs of his book:

‘There was, though, a bitter irony in her send-off. For in this final act of damnation she found herself lying next to a man she barely tolerated, in the private cemetery of a family she loathed, covered by the earth of a country she hated.‘
