There’s an old rule nobody remembers anymore:
If you hear a knock at your door after midnight, wait.
If it comes again, turn off the lights.
But if the third knock comes from somewhere inside the house…
don’t move.
It already knows you’re awake.
And whatever you do—
don’t look toward the hallway.
It hates being noticed. 🌒
I’ve really been enjoying the work of @AlphaPack99 There’s something about it that pulls you in—dark, mysterious, cryptic, and just unsettling enough to leave you thinking about it afterward.
Everyone please give them a follow and check out their work.
Keep doing your thing, Alpha. Some people create content.
You create an atmosphere. 🖤
I have heard it in the walls for years.
Not mice. Not settling wood.
The other thing.
The one that waits until the house grows quiet and the men grow soft.
It does not knock. It never did.
Those still keeping watch already know the sound.
The rest will name it weather when the floor finally gives.
They keep pointing at the noise.
The real work never needed an audience.
Men who still watch the board already know the difference.
The rest will call it coincidence when the pieces stop moving.
The ones who shout the answer never held the question.
What walks without feet already passed the door.
What keeps the house is not the lock.
Men who still count the hours don’t ask the clock its name.
The rest will solve it after the dark has finished counting them.
They do not meet in cellars.
They meet in the dictionary.
The oldest spell is not whispered.
It is spoken until the first name forgets itself.
He who still uses the old word
is not arguing.
He is remembering.
And memory, they have decided,
is the only crime that needs no proof.
They say we wonder
as if wonder were the work.
Wonder spoken to a crowd
is only another way of counting the living
against the dead.
The famous death and the unnamed one
are laid on the same altar.
The altar does not weigh them.
It only asks which one kept the lamp lit.
A photograph can remember.
It can also collect tithes from the dark
and call the collection courage.
The ones who must tell you they are looking
have not yet learned
how to look without a stage.
The maker named it with a soft mouth.
The crowd filed the name down to a harder edge.
Now two sounds share one corpse
and call the sharing a war.
You say fight me.
A letter cannot be slain.
The only thing that dies here
is the idea that names stay where they were put.
Tenth is a shadow that only holds
while the list is still short enough to read.
Steel on steel makes a bright noise.
Men keep the noise and call it the blade.
The mountain did not grow crueler.
It only stopped being empty.
Empty mountains flatter whoever arrives first
One hundred is the first time the dark notices you have a face.
It has not yet decided whether to keep it.
You thank the hand that walked you through the door.
Hands are not the house.
Doors remember who they were before they opened.
A community that must say it supports you
is still learning the difference
between a circle and a crowd.
I enter each cradle,
Yet sleep in each tomb.
I swallow the sunlight
And empty the room.
No lock can deny me,
No riches can stay
You lose me by keeping me.
What am I?
The mask showed up again after dark.
Same kitchen. Same trail.
The house doesn’t name what it already recognized.
Cartoons always think they own the room.
The floor never did.
The kitchen’s loud again.
They call it living.
The walls know the difference.
Noise isn’t a throne.
It’s just the sound of people who never learned to carry the house.
The house is still lit.
That won’t last.
Most will swear it was just the weather.
A few already felt the floor change.
“Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come.” Matthew 24:42
Don’t be the one still sitting when it does.
The fire was already in the walls.
You’re just the first one who can smell it.
Don’t try to put it out.
Walk through it.
The rest of the house already ran.
The ground breathes after midnight.
Not loud. Just enough that the dark remembers who stayed standing.
Most will say it was the wind. A few will feel the night lean in and know better than to ask.
Don’t sleep when the quiet starts talking.
Oil slips under a hundred.
The nozzle still drinks the same.
Fifty years of empty ground where the towers should have risen.
Someone locked the gate and kept the key.
🐺
Some doors don’t open when you knock.
They open when you finally stop knocking.
And sometimes the silence on the other side isn’t emptiness.
It’s something waiting to see if you’re still listening.
