In sports there are two “can't miss” options.
“Can't miss talent” — which many consider @AJ_Dybantsa. Including me.
And “can't miss decisions” — as in franchise can't afford to make the wrong choice.
The @WashWizards, owners of the top overall pick, haven't faced a more consequential moment since selecting @JohnWall in the same position in 2010.
D.C. makes decisions with domestic and geopolitical ramifications hourly.
This isn't that for the Wizards.
But this is one of those decisions that’ll dictate the franchise’s relevancy for the next decade.
Washington needs a playmaker. A charismatic superstar. A re-direction of its emotional forecast.
AJ feels like all three.
This is the city of Go-Go music and Mambo sauce. Front Porch Freestyles and Tiny Desk concerts.
NBA success? Ehh, that's a sore topic.
The Wizards haven’t won a playoff series since 2017. The franchise hasn’t been to an Eastern Conference Finals since 1979 — a year after winning its lone NBA title. And that’s the last time the franchise won 50 games in a season.
They were the Bullets then.
Since the turn of the century, Washington has been haunted by many things, including LeBron James and self-sabotage
Let that marinate.
Generations of DC basketball fans have never felt the rush of a contender.
That’s why the decision itself doesn’t matter. Getting it right does.
As New York celebrates in unparalleled jubilation, the basketball universe drowns in FOMO. The Wizards want — no, need – that turnaround from laughingstock to king of the hill.
Look at the rest of the city.
In the past decade, the Commanders have made an NFC Championship game… and the Mystics, Capitals, and Nationals have all won titles.
This #1 pick for the Wizards is more than a player. It’s a grasp at success that’s been so foreign for so long.
Opportunities like this don’t come around often. The renovations coming to the arena are an important factor here too.
This is a moment that can change a franchise. Or haunt a city.
So, yeah, Dawkins isn't lying here. There's a genuine excitement around Wizards basketball that hasn't been in a long, long time. But excitement, like potential, has a short shelf life.
Here's hoping now is when that fanbase can finally cash in. @Domo8186
Congrats Knick Fans .. don't let nobody steal yall joy ... yall been through it all 💙🧡. Yall captain bet on himself and doubled down and brought it home . 🏆
The Wire ended 18 yrs ago today. It’s been taught in Ivy League schools, law schools & film schools. David Simon was interviewed by a sitting president about its lasting impact. Cited in a State Supreme Court ruling. Often hailed by critics as the best ever. Never won an Emmy.
Rest in POWER, Oliver Grant.
