See you all at Nyansapo Dialogue tonight.
This afternoon, on behalf of His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, I welcomed the Vice President of Colombia, Her Excellency Francia Elena Márquez Mina, to Ghana. In my welcome address, I reiterated that her second visit to Ghana since she became Vice President is meaningful, as it reinforces the strong and longstanding partnership between our two nations. This relationship is founded on mutual respect, shared aspirations, and the enduring bonds of friendship and solidarity.
Her Excellency’s distinguished career, rooted in her steadfast advocacy for racial justice, human dignity, and global reparative dialogue, is well known in Latin America and beyond. I recognized that Colombia’s stance on advancing reparations for communities historically impacted by slavery, marginalisation, and systemic inequities is closely aligned with Ghana’s own role as an advocate in the international discourse on restorative justice.
I remarked that The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) avails Colombian businesses access to Africa’s single market and provides an opportunity to build sustainable trade and investment links with Africa, using Ghana as a gateway. We also looked at the significant potential between Ghana and Colombia in key areas such as trade and investment, agriculture, digital innovation, and climate resilience, and concluded that all these would be facilitated by strengthening air and port connectivity between the two countries.
A Memorandum of Understanding on academic cooperation between the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Colombia and the Foreign Service Institute of Ghana was signed at the end of our deliberations.
We applaud the solid bilateral relations between Ghana and Colombia as an excellent model of South-South cooperation. And Her Excellency and I agree on the need to deepen our collaboration in areas of shared strategic interests.
