The MMR vaccines are commonly thought to give lifelong immunity against measles, but a modelling study suggests the level of protection actually falls by a small amount each year. https://t.co/H1tx3oyosQ

Our paper shows that nextgen flu vaccines may greatly reduce the impact of flu on the population of England & Wales

These results show the importance of combining different data sources to understand individual transmission, and how genetic sequences collected during outbreaks can supplement information from contact tracing investigations, and avoid classification errors.
🚨 New paper in @Virus_Evolution: Quantifying the value of viral genomics when inferring who infected whom in the 2014–16 Ebola virus outbreak in Guinea. https://t.co/BC6GP78xg9
However, combined reconstruction highlighted likely connections between cases which had not been identified through contact-tracing and showed that three cases had been misclassified (i.e. their genetic sequences were too different from the person who allegedly infected them).
Unlike contact-tracing investigations, combined reconstruction could not identify one specific infector per case. This suggests that the level of certainty achievable with contact tracing investigations is hard to reach with reconstruction methods.
Onset dates or genetic sequences alone were not sufficient to show who infected whom. We had more success by combining both onset dates and genetic sequences (using outbreaker2). For each Ebola case, we identified a small pool of potential infectors.
New paper by @AlxsRobert and others comparing inference of transmission chains from genomic data with epidemiological investigations - as well as a combination of the two: https://t.co/MDN26Rvmio
🚨 A short article I wrote for @TheSRAOrg Research Matters about how participant voices are feeding into the design of a new UK birth cohort study, including some really interesting qualitative work and focus groups with parents and young people I was lucky to be involved in
Our study on the duration of antibody positivity following Leptospira infection is now out in PLOS NTD! Huge thanks to my coauthors @adamjkucharski, @drrachellowe, @lau_colleen, Mike Kama, Simon Reid

How do RSV and Influenza interact?
-> Co-infection increases the reporting rate
-> Either a moderate reduction or almost no reduction in susceptibility following infection is compatabile with the data

Over the moon that @IsabelKFletcher has passed her PhD viva! 🎉🎉🎉🥂🥂🥂
It has been such a pleasure working with you Isabel over the years you have created such a brilliant collection of climate and health research, feeling so proud🤩😭🥰 Congratulations Dr. Fletcher! 🎉🎉🎉

The endemic-epidemic framework is a great way to model infectious diseases, combining statistical and epi approaches. And it's implemented in an R package.
Find out all about it and applications to measles, covid etc in this hybrid workshop. 👇
NEW in BMC Medicine: The impact of local vaccine coverage and recent incidence on measles transmission in France between 2009 and 2018 https://t.co/7pKRcWf1yB
The code developed for this analysis can be found here: https://t.co/ORz8J4boQb
This work was presented at the last Epidemics conference, so here's the poster I wrote, and a slightly awkward video from my living-room as a bonus https://t.co/30J243Z2xb
🚨 New paper published in @BMCMedicine on #measles transmission dynamics in France, with @AdamJKucharski and @sbfnk https://t.co/HByaXJxEbs ! We investigated the impact of different indicators of #immunity on the local risks of measles outbreaks.
We believe this analysis provides important insights into measles transmission in near #elimination settings, and is especially valuable when the level of two-dose #MMR coverage was reported to be at a decade low in the UK https://t.co/N71QwahoeF
