There are 196 tribes on Earth that still refuse all contact with outsiders. Brazil has 115 of them, more than any country, and its government flies planes over their villages on purpose.

The flyovers exist because of a brutal catch in how Brazil protects land. Forest only gets shielded as Indigenous territory if FUNAI, the Indigenous affairs agency, can prove isolated people actually live there. No proof, and loggers and miners move in. So agents photograph longhouses and gardens from the air, confirm the tribe exists, and never land.

The word "uncontacted" hides the real history. Most of these groups descend from people who met the outside world during the rubber boom a century ago, when enslavement and disease killed roughly 90% of western Amazonia's Indigenous population. Their ancestors ran deeper into the forest and never came back out.

The ones who did come out show why.

The Nahua in Peru were contacted in 1984 after oil exploration opened their land. Half of them were dead within a few years, mostly from colds and flu. The Matis in Brazil were contacted in 1978. Five years later, 87 of them were left. The Panará lost 80% of their people in the eight years after a highway was bulldozed through their forest.

A respiratory bug that costs you three days on the couch can erase half a village with no immunity to it.

So Brazil settled on the strangest conservation policy on Earth. Prove they exist. Guard the borders. Never say hello.

WATCH | A Zimbabwean man identified as Lawrence Chamurwa has sparked public outrage after a video showing him confronting a group of women at a restaurant in Sandton went viral.

The incident happened at Vlamo Restaurant after the women rejected his romantic advances. The man is accused of following the women to the restaurant’s bathroom area and confronting them.

In the video, Chamurwa is heard making threats, including saying he would “murd€r” the women and “put bullets” in them. He also reportedly boasted about being wealthy and living in places including Steyn City and Cape Town.

The restaurant confirmed that the man was escorted off the premises after staff were alerted to the incident.

Hi Crime Watch Zim. Please hide my ID. There is a roadblock that is always on Remembrance Road near ZBC, Mbare. It's supposedly Mbare Traffic. Can authorities check what is really happening there?

I was stopped earlier today at what I thought was a routine vehicle check. I had no passengers. A female officer introduced herself and said they were checking for compliance and safety items.

I showed my spare wheel, jack, triangles and fire extinguisher. Everything was in order. She then said, “We can't just leave you to go without you giving us something."

I asked if she had found anything wrong and she said no, just give us $5 if you want to pass. I said I can't do that.

She then said she is now writing a $15 ticket because my windscreen is dirty and the offence she wrote was for “Failure to maintain windscreen.” I have a ticket the name of the lady officer who threatened to impound my car if I didn't have the $15 with me. Because I was behind time I had to pay.

Can the authorities please check this roadblock? If we are compliant, why are we being forced to pay? This is becoming too much for motorists on that road.

Se surgir uma ameaça real, as autoridades locais terão de, num curto espaço de tempo, designar as áreas a evacuar em primeira instância, ativar pontos de reunião e preparar rotas e transportes. A coordenação ficará a cargo dos governadores e do Centro Governamental de Segurança, e em tempo de guerra, as Forças Armadas serão envolvidas nas operações.

Em primeira instância, serão evacuadas as crianças, as mulheres grávidas, os pacientes dos hospitais, as pessoas com deficiência e aqueles que não estão em condições de abandonar autonomamente a zona de ameaça. As famílias serão evacuadas juntas, sempre que possível.

Recomenda-se aos residentes que preparem apenas os itens mais essenciais para as primeiras 72 horas. Nos locais de alojamento temporário, o Estado deve garantir aos evacuados água, alimentos, medicamentos, roupa e produtos de higiene.

O plano abrange não só a guerra, mas também grandes atos de sabotagem, falhas industriais e catástrofes naturais. Após o fim da ameaça, as autoridades devem organizar o regresso dos residentes às suas casas.
