If you church ethos is:
Obey your pastor
Obey your elders
Obey your husband
This is called a high-control environment.
Life outside is amazing, but the journey can be brutal.
As people climb the leadership tree the assumption is they are incredibly competent in most things. They start to believe their own press. Having reached the pinnacle it becomes increasingly difficult to convince them they are wrong about anything important. 1/2
What is it like to be married to a narcissist/psychopath?
1. Scary. You know they will punish you if they are not happy with you. They sometimes suddenly launch into a powerful rage. They sometimes don’t talk to you for long periods.
2. Hurtful. They put their wants and needs first. They sabotage things that make you happy.
3. Confusing. They sometimes say and do nice things.
4. Abusive. They might physically hurt you or remove access to money or rape you or scream at you or stand over and yell at you for hours about reasonable requests or compromise your children.
5. Frustrating. They often block, delay or postpone decisions that are important to you.
6. Confidence-reducing. They demean, belittle and minimise you and your needs and points you make.
7. Lonely. They often control who you can see or make your relationships with others difficult. There is no such thing as real partnership. You possibly realise that they have been undermining you behind your back but positioning the undermining in a way that seems supportive. For example, ‘She is having mental health issues so best to stay away for awhile. Also best not to raise it with her but I’m giving her a lot of support.’
8. Anxiety-inducing. You often know they are lying but they never acknowledge it so you are in a constant state of wondering and second guessing. Fact is, they are always leading a double life. They leave things until the last minute, rearrange plans, get you to do a lot of work then ignore the results, take actions that ensure you are always on egg shells.
9. Soul destroying. You do things to keep the peace, none of which support you.
10. Isolating. You don’t really know how to tell people what you are experiencing. Often, it is death by 1000 cuts and to relay just one or two of these cuts does not allow others to understand yet to explain the entire context is too time-consuming and intense.
Have I missed any?
In abusive relationships, there's this constant feeling that you’re falling short, no matter how much you try. You start each day thinking, "Today, I’ll get it right. I’ll meet their expectations." But somehow, the standards keep shifting just beyond reach. It’s like running on a treadmill, getting nowhere, just exhausted and defeated.
There’s always something: the way you speak, the things you enjoy, the way you look or think—it all somehow seems “wrong.” And after hearing that you’re not enough so many times, you start believing it. You stop trusting your own sense of worth. It’s a trap, really, one that keeps you striving endlessly for a validation that never comes, chasing after “good enough” while your own self-worth slips away in the process.

NEW CHART. The interpretation "God hates divorce" is not the oldest nor most traditional interpretation of Malachi 2:16. In fact, it was only popular for 385 years. Once the Dead Sea Scrolls were published and shed more light on that text, that ended. The new major Bible translations published since 1999 don't interpret it as "God hates divorce."
It has gone back to being an anti-treachery verse.
