And some more personal news: next week, I’ll join Common Sense Media as their Head of Research. Delighted to be leading a strong team of researchers and to build on more than a decade of great, impactful work. @CommonSense
I'll be on NPR's @1a tomorrow Thursday 10/12 @ 11am talking with @manoushz@luciamawe@cliffordsussman about our new report examining teens and tweens use of smartphones, and unpacking how all of us use, manage and struggle with these devices. https://t.co/jjQkcAPQH0
For more on the findings about how young people use smartphones, visit our report page for links to the full report, short articles for parents, an audio guide for managing notifications, a video explainer for the report, and a lesson for educators. https://t.co/zylZHDHUJM
Sharing a new piece of research out this week from Jenny Radesky and her lab @MottChildren & me and my team @CommonSense that looks at a week in the life of a young person's smartphone, using passive sensing data and youth co-interpretation of that data. 🧵https://t.co/zylZHDHUJM
TikTok was another topic that came up in the study, especially when talking with youth about the findings. On average pre-teens and teens in the study spent an hour and 12 min a day on TikTok. Youth described the app as "easy," snack-size videos tailored to their preferences.

Important new research from my Privacy team colleagues that shines a light on the ways platforms mislead families about what they’re doing with kids’ data.
Once kids download an app or log in, they share their basic demographics & open the door to continuous detailed tracking of their preferences and behaviors.
📌 Our new research found that most platforms mislead families about how they sell personal data: https://t.co/LfzCu3AFPG
“Cellphones allow cultural anthropologists to explore the material, social, and linguistic dimensions of human lives at the local and global scale," says Bell. "And thus, think about how we are interconnected through electronics.” 🤳🌏📱 #UnseenConnections
The new Smithsonian cellphone exhibit is pretty amazing, with interactive selfie tower phones, amazing artwork, and a fix your phone station (with top-notch tools)! #UnseenConnections
Our newest exhibit is now open! Curated by @nmnh cultural anthropologist Joshua Bell, Cellphone: #UnseenConnections examines the intersection of culture, technology, and nature. 🤳🌏📱📶
Great piece by @clairecm in Saturday’s NYT that lays out the real challenges in doing the research that helps us understand what social media means for our kids. As a field, we’ve done great work, but there is so much more to learn and do.
Research: Social media effects depend on individuals & what they see.
“It's impossible to know what children will see ahead of time. Sometimes it’s hair dye/dance vids... sometimes it’s white supremacy/eating disorder content.” - @Amanda_Lenhart@clairecm

And I'll join curator Joshua Bell in a public chat at the Solstice Saturday evening event launching the exhibit on June 24th - it's free - you just need to register in advance for tickets. https://t.co/2L0D1KknVP
One of the most enjoyable projects of my career has been serving as an advisor to this new exhibit Cellphone: Unseen Connections launching next week at the National Museum of Natural History. I highly recommend checking it out if you're in DC over the next 3 years!
“Cellphones have become a defining feature of human interaction globally. This technology is an intimate part of what being human is.” --Joshua Bell, Curator of Globalization @smithsoniannmnh

Glad to see balanced recommendations from @APA health advisory on youth & social media. It's important to give parents and youth guidance and tools to help them manage their use, but also ensure that tech cos & institutions take responsibility for creating safe ecosystems too.
I am honored to be part of the @APA health advisory on social media and adolescent mental health. Our evidence based recommendations call for a balanced perspective to help youth benefit from the opportunities of social media while minimizing the risks for harm. 👇
