From Lagos to Times Square – A Dream Designed

Still feels surreal… watching the flyer I designed as the Team Lead of Graphics at Chess in Slums Africa light up the heart of Times Square — it’s a moment I’ll never forget.

Every move on a chessboard has the power to change the course of a game. At Chess in Slums Africa, we believe in the power of chess to create opportunities that can also change the course of a child's life.

This World Chess Day, we join the global chess community in celebrating a game that goes far beyond the board—a game that opens doors, transforms lives, and inspires hope.

Today, we also renew our commitment to creating pathways to a brighter future through chess, education, mentorship, and the holistic support children need to develop critical thinking, confidence, resilience, and the skills to thrive.

Cheers to transforming lives and empowering a new generation of leaders who will shape their communities and inspire others to believe in what is possible—one move, one child, and one community at a time.

We took the game of chess to 3 public schools in Lagos and watched 79 students become something far greater than chess players.

Across 13 weeks, cohort 2 of our Chess to Dream, After-School program didn't just teach chess, it gave students from Mobolaji Bank-Anthony, Aje Comprehensive & Wesley Girls Junior Secondary School the skills, mindset, and confidence to think bigger and go further.

When you teach a child to think several moves ahead, you don't just create better chess players, you create Africa's next problem-solvers, innovators, and dreamers.

A very special thank you to @midenhq for believing in this vision and investing in the next generation of leaders who will shape the future of Africa.

Every child is a king.

Today reminds us of our shared responsibility to protect every child. As we reflect on the heartbreaking news of the abducted children in Ogbomosho, we are reminded that no child should ever grow up surrounded by fear. Every child deserves safety, love, education, and the freedom to dream without danger at their doorstep.

Protecting children is a responsibility that belongs to all of us. In our homes, schools, communities, and across our nation, we must become people who listen, nurture, and protect. Because when a child is protected, a future is preserved.

Today, and every day, we choose to stand for every child not only in words, but in action.

Make a lot of mistakes, that’s okay - but never assume you can do it better than someone who does it FOR A LIVING.

It’s not too harsh. The learning curve in design today is very different from what it was a decade ago. Tools are getting smarter, but the ability to think visually, solve problems, and develop taste still takes years to build.

This might sound a bit harsh but the painful truth is Adobe and Figma adding AI features isn’t innovation in my opinion . It’s a design tool slowly becoming a crutch for people who never learned to think visually in the first place.
