The British segregated them however under the Divide and Conquer Method that they revolutionized. There was an entire war that occurred as a result of British colonization.

Clean yourself before prayer, after sex(actually cleaning), before bed, and the Qu’ran has the first documentation of the importance of practicing regular oral hygiene.
