#EDH5309
My favorite theme that I heard come up in a couple of the panels was "fail fast and forward." It is such great advice, but difficult to implement. Trying and failing has been so much more productive for me than planning and re-planning (without action)
@ChallenWelling1 I wish I had thought of this! This is the first time since middle school when I couldn't make some time to catch the events I wanted, but I am so excited to finally have some time to get caught up!
@cjanelacosta This is such a hard idea to conceptualize. the long-term care facility I work at was trying to "return to normal," but I think we've taken a step back in the process....
@EmilyOstermeyer Thank you for sharing! After just scanning through the hashtag quick, I feel like this will be a great place to check out while writing my treatise this next year
#EDH5309
For my hashtags, I learned that I have to refamiliarize myself with Twitter hashtags. Jumping back into the Twitterverse after a 2.5 year hiatus, I forgot a lot and let my own curiosity outweigh practicality with choosing hashtags that my communities were actively using
@ItsDrMordecai#EDH5309
Thank you so much for giving us your time! Your sentiments about missing the micro-connections of daily life pre-COVID really resonated with me. I also have a much greater respect for digital community building, but I cannot wait to connect in person again
@DARleaderdoc Yes! There's so much that everyone can gain when you have open perspectives from everyone. And also, you're actually allowing the SOCIAL to be in social media instead of having a clever marketing campaign
@JustTonio I disagree. I see where you're coming from, but I think there's so much more we can gain from social media if we work on it from all levels and not focus on professional curation. Also, demanding professional excellence online reduces the personal aspect of social media
Admin need to create the environment that they boast about on social media. Professors should highlight what they are doing and their students' success. And students just need to do what students do (they're not being paid by the institution)
#EDH5309
I believe that everyone on campus is responsible for social media—from students to administrators. Because social media is not controlled for who sees what, it doesn't look good to have admin saying something that differs from what students and professors are saying
@TylerAThomas @IAmJennyPetty @KristaBoniface Thank you for giving your time for this week's #EDH5309 panel. I love the "fail fast" mindset. During the beginning of COVID, I read about failure as a means of growth, and it was so great to hear that point reiterated by other people
@EmilyOstermeyer Some advice that has worked for me: just do a little digging and lurk on a page or two at a time. If you find you like the content that's being posted, it'll probably stay that way so you could join. If you don't like it, just move on to the next one you find
@ChallenWelling1 I totally agree. And I feel like a major part of that is looking at social media pages of the people who work there alongside the institution pages
@ChallenWelling1 Dial-up. I think it's a meme at this point, but I can still remember a conversation I was having with a student who could not believe that using the internet tied up the phone line as well (also the fact that we had a single phone line growing up...)
@cjanelacosta I really dislike the phrase "serious academic." It just seems like such an open invitation to add more elitism to a field already drowning in it

For posting on some pretty heavy-hitting subjects on social media, does anybody else feel like Imposter Syndrome is lurking just a little close than usual?
#EDH5309 Twitter Chat AFQ
Maybe have an open Zoom social where current students and past student can opt to get together and talk about what they carried with them/what worked or didn't/how their social media habits changed
@AmberMccown I'm all for mixing personal and professional! In my (still limited) usage of social media, I want to take the "this is what you get" approach and try to embrace every part of who I am online in the same place
