The fire originated in a room of the National Assembly and affected several upper floor offices and committee rooms. Certain parts of the lower floor, while not affected by fire, were left flooded due to the activation of the fire sprinkler system.

This is not the first time in recent years South Africa's Parliament has been set ablaze. On March 17, 2021, a fire broke out at Parliament's Old Assembly building. @SABCNews

4) The chamber which currently holds the National Assembly was originally built to house joint sittings of the Tricameral Parliament established in 1983.

A Brief history of the construction of Parliament:
1) In the late 1800s, the Public Works Department of the time commissioned one of its architects, Charles Freeman, to design the parliamentary building.

3) With the Unification of South Africa in 1910, the House of Assembly was added to the original structure to house the country’s Union Parliament.
