Fear-based politics is twisting common sense sentencing reforms into "wanting to let violent criminals out of prison so they can hurt more people." And the worst kind of politicians wield this rhetoric in a room full of crime victims, weaponizing their trauma for political gain.
We’re so excited to welcome back former Appleseed intern Libby Rau as our new Legal Assistant (and once you read her story, you’ll see why!). https://t.co/222PzyGZ92
I am so proud of my colleague @AkieshaAnderson. She came to us at the start of the pandemic, instantly discerned how the Alabama state house works, & set about successfully advocating for policies that will make a real impact in hundreds of thousands of lives. Absolute rock star.
HB 200, the driver's license suspension bill is back on the schedule this week & we need your voice (again)! 95% of the people whose driver’s licenses are suspended are NOT habitually reckless & dangerous drivers. Tell your lawmaker to vote YES for HB 200. https://t.co/mRyASNSjfj
In case you missed it, Brookside mayor and city attorney issued separate statements in the middle of the night, their first since the town became synonymous with policing for profit.

The Supreme Court has held that the death penalty is not cruel and unusual punishment. Trump’s DOJ believed that being incarcerated in a Alabama prison is cruel and unusual punishment. They believe being incarcerated in Alabama is worse than the death penalty. Any comment?
Did you see us on national tv this weekend? Appleseed & our client Motis are featured in a new commercial highlighting our partnership with the @NFL to free victims of wrongful punishment & excessive sentencing. Thanks to the @InspireChange initiative for your support.
https://t.co/SXWmI3p8vz via @politico “You have to have a sense that there is something that allows you to buy into the idea that indeed you must act like a civilized person in this place of despair[.] If the system is not giving you that, then you can’t build enough prisons.”
"You can try and prove people right and use that as positive motivation but sometimes you have to prove people wrong."
Another former @ChargerMBB standout has officially signed to play pro🏀
So great catching up with you @Swalve23!! Happy you never gave up on your dreams
We are thrilled to partner with Yellowhammer for their Locals Series this week! Order one of these fabulous, action packed t-shirts by Sun, 8/22 at midnight. 50% of the proceeds will be donated to Appleseed to help fight for #abetterAlabama https://t.co/pwFoPcAVVY
What if -- bear with me here -- what if instead of spending relief dollars on more prisons we instead invested it in people and programming? Call me crazy, but maybe we want to just cut the poverty-to-prison pipeline off at the source? More below...
This is a common mindset in Alabama that has allowed state prisons to exist in perpetual crisis. Having concern for incarcerated people does not mean one doesn't have sympathy for crime victims. It's not an either/or.
