Petition to the European Union and the United Kingdom: Urgent Action on the Crisis in Tigray
We, the undersigned, call upon the European Union and the Government of the United Kingdom to uphold their commitments to human rights, international law, and justice by taking immediate and meaningful action regarding the ongoing crisis in Tigray, Ethiopia.
Despite repeated expressions of concern, the situation in Tigray remains dire. The Pretoria Cessation of Hostilities Agreement, signed in November 2022, has not been fully implemented. Critical provisions—particularly those related to the withdrawal of foreign and non-federal forces, restoration of basic services, and protection of civilians—continue to be ignored.
Today, hundreds of thousands of internally displaced Tigrayans are living in more than 140 IDP centers under extremely harsh and inhumane conditions. Access to food, healthcare, and shelter remains severely limited. At the same time, justice for the grave atrocities committed during the conflict—widely documented by international organizations—has not been delivered. Accountability is not merely delayed; it is being denied.
We are deeply concerned by recent indications that the European Union and the United Kingdom are considering strengthening financial and political support to the Ethiopian federal government without ensuring concrete, verifiable progress on human rights, accountability, and the full implementation of the Pretoria Agreement. Providing financial assistance under such conditions risks enabling continued impunity and prolonging the suffering of civilians.
We respectfully demand the following:
1Condition any financial assistance or normalization of relations on the full and verified implementation of the Pretoria Agreement.
2Call for the immediate withdrawal of all non-federal and foreign forces from Tigray.
3Ensure the unconditional restoration of essential services, including banking, telecommunications, electricity, and humanitarian access.
4Support and advocate for an independent, international investigation into alleged war crimes, crimes against humanity, and acts of genocide committed during the conflict.
5Prioritize the protection, safe return, and rehabilitation of internally displaced persons.
6Engage directly with victims and affected communities to ensure their voices are central to any policy decisions.
The people of Tigray have endured immense suffering. They deserve not only peace, but justice, dignity, and the restoration of their fundamental rights. Silence and inaction in the face of such suffering undermine the very principles the EU and UK claim to uphold.
Justice delayed is justice denied.

Fire Destroys Shelters at Tigrayan Refugee Camp in Imrakuba, Sudan
----
A fire broke out at a Tigrayan refugee camp in Imrakuba, Sudan, on Saturday, April 18, 2026, destroying multiple shelters and leaving dozens of refugees without basic necessities.
According to information provided to Tigrai Television, Adhanom Kahsay, a representative of Asmelash Grand Foundation, a humanitarian organization operating in the camp, confirmed that 14 shelters were completely destroyed in the incident.
The representative reported that the fire had displaced more than 60 refugees who had been living in the affected shelters, adding that many had lost access to essential items, including housing, food, and clothing, further worsening their already fragile living conditions.
He also noted that displaced populations in Imrakuba camp, as well as in other refugee camps across Sudan, continue to face worsening conditions due to recurring fire incidents.
The affected community, already enduring severe hardship, has called for urgent and coordinated efforts to support their situation and facilitate their safe return to their homeland.
If farmers in #Tigray are not allowed to farm this season, people will starve.
We cannot wait until there is mass starvation to start talking about this.
If the farmlands of Tigray become a battlefield, the children, pregnant women, and the elderly will suffer most.
News: Teachers, students in #Tigray protest federal #salary suspension, call for international pressure
Senior officials of the Tigray Interim Administration, alongside educators and students, staged large-scale protests across several towns in Tigray, including the capital #Mekelle, on 24 March 2026, condemning the federal government’s decision to “suspend civil servant #salaries” and calling for international intervention, regional broadcaster, Tigrai Television televised.
The demonstrations, which drew thousands of teachers and students, underscored a deepening humanitarian and education crisis in the regional. Regional authorities say the federal government has halted salary payments for teachers since October 2025, a move they argue violates constitutional provisions and international legal obligations.
#Amanuel_Assefa, Vice President of the Tigrai Interim Administration, told protesters that the suspension of budgets and salaries is a deliberate effort to dismantle Tigray’s social fabric.
“The education system in Tigray was a primary target of the genocide and continues to suffer severe damage,” Amanuel said, adding that more than 1.2 million children remain out of school due to slow recovery of infrastructure. “The denial of budgets, fuel, and medicine is a calculated effort to weaken and disperse the people of Tigray.”
Earlier this month, the Tigray education bureau had issued an urgent appeal to the federal government warning that a deepening funding shortfall is jeopardizing the fragile recovery of the region’s education system as teachers remain unpaid and schools face possible closure.

Let #Tigray farm.
Right now, #Tigray is on the cusp of planting season. What gets planted needs to grow and be harvested in order to feed Tigray through the lean season at the end of the summer.
Aid is ending. If the harvest fails, Tigray will very likely see a famine.
